A billet includes a solid steel body and an alloy cladding. The cladding may include a square tube in which the body is inserted with an interface at which the cladding becomes bonded to the body when the billet is heated and rolled or otherwise worked into a ferrous product. At least one element composed of a mass of finely divided scavenging aluminum, titanium or magnesium, is placed in the tube adjacent the body and separate from the interface. The elements are advantageously compressed into briquettes which scavenge oxygen from residual air at the interface to prevent oxidation of the cladding at the interface. The tube may be closed to prevent gases outside the billet from penetrating to the interface. Alternatively, reliance may be placed on the briquettes to scavenge oxygen from the residual air and also from atmospheric air and furnace gases before they can penetrate to the interface.

Danach wird auf den Zweierverbund erneut ein Rohr aus weichem Werkstoff aufgezogen und der so gewonnene Dreierverbund durch Warm- oder Kaltwalzen und anschließendes Kaltziehen auf Endmaß gebracht.

A method for producing an oxide superconducting wire, which comprises a step of providing a composite comprising a powder containing an oxide superconducting substance or a raw material for an oxide superconducting substance and a metal covering the powder, and a step of rolling the composite with the use of a lubricating material having a kinetic viscosity of 20 X 10-6mm2/s or less. The method allows the improvement of the accuracy of the dimension of the width and thickness of the above wire and also the production of a superconducting wire exhibiting improved superconducting characteristics.

The method of manufacturing the oxide superconducting wire includes preparing a composite by covering with metal powder containing an oxide superconductor or raw material for an oxide superconductor, and rolling the composite using a lubricant having kinematic viscosity of 20 × 10 -6 mm 2 /s or smaller.
