A shrinkable iridescent film constitutes an oriented multilayer coextruded iridescent film having at least 10 generally parallel, very thin layers of substantially iniform thickness in which the contiguous adjacent layers are of heat shrinkable thermoplastic resinous material, each of which is heat shrinkable in at least one dimension in the plane of the film, the continuous adjacent layers being substantially uniformly shrinkable so as to have refractive indexes which differ by at least 0.03. The shrinkable film is made by selecting appropriate thermoplastic resinous materials, coextruding them into a thick film and then subjecting the film to orientation below the heat set temperature of the resinous materials.

A method and system for forming an article having an optical effect is provided. An original texture is obtained which is digitized using a scanner. The scanner causes a shadow effect on the texture based on the scanning direction. The digitized texture is then edited to define a selected shape. The texture within the selected shape is offset such that its direction is changed. The digitized texture is then engraved by a laser onto the surface of an article. The selected shape is then visually distinct from the other areas of the texture at certain viewing angles caused by the difference in their texture direction. With the present invention, lines or seams between areas of the texture are eliminated.

A fibrous sheet is provided with an outer surface having fibrous elements which are embossed with a pattern of fine grooves that are substantially aligned from fibrous element to fibrous element. The pattern of fine grooves is embossed directly on the surface of the fibrous sheet and produces rainbow and/or hologram images on exposure to light. In contrast, prior fabrics for producing rainbow or hologram images were laminated to plastic or metal foils having pre-embossed patterns of grooves. Sheets and fabrics of the present invention are free from such impermeable foils and retain desirable attributes of breathability and other aesthetic qualities.

According to the inventive method for decorating the surface of a substrate, a coating agent which can be at least partially cured by irradiation with energy-rich radiation (e.g. light) is applied to the substrate surface to be decorated and the uncured coating layer is irradiated with energy-rich radiation in at least the area or areas to be decorated through one or more masks, these masks being permeable to energy-rich radiation and having structures which are set 100 to 20000 nm apart and which are less transparent or impermeable to energy-rich radiation. The areas in the coating layer that have not yet been cured are then cured thermally and/or with energy-rich radiation.
