A pumpable composition for adding to an acidic medium for producing ferrous dithionite in said acidic medium, which comprises an alkaline slurry of iron particles, hydrated crystalts of an alkali metal sulfite, and an alkaline aqueous saturated solution of said alkali metal sulfite and an alkali metal hydroxide, having a pH between 9 and 12, wherein the molar ration of said sulfite to iron contained is between 0.1 and 10. A process for removing dissolved heavy metal from an aqueous solution containing said heavy metal which comprises admixing said solution with a source of ferrous and dithionite ion in solution at a pH between 1 and 7 to effect precipitation of said heavy metal and recovering said precipitated heavy metal.

High purity solutions of alkali metal hydrosulfites having low concentrations of alkali metal thiosulfates are produced in a process which comprises feeding an alcohol-free aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydrosulfite containing an alkali metal thiosulfate as an impurity to a crystallizing zone. Produced in the crystallizing zone is a slurry of alkali metal hydrosulfite crystals which is conveyed from the crystallizing zone to a separating zone. The separating zone, employing a non-gravitational separation means, recovers a slurry of alkali metal hydrosulfite crystals from a first mother liquor. A portion of the slurry of alkali metal hydrosulfite crystals is conveyed to a concentrating zone to recover a cake of alkali metal hydrosulfite crystals from a second mother liquor. The cake alkali metal hydrosulfrte hydrate crystals is admixed with water in a dissolving zone to produce a purified solution of an alkali metal hydrosulfite having reduced concentrations of said alkali metal thiosulfate as an impurity. The process is operated to minimize the residence time of alkali metal hydrosulfite containing mother liquors in the crystallizing zone and prevent significant decomposition of the crystals of alkali metal hydrosulfite.

An improvement in the process for producing anhydrous dithionites by reacting formic acid or a formate with an alkali compound and sulfurous acid anhydride in a mixture of water and organic solvent; filtering dithionite crystals from the mother liquor; and washing the dithionite crystals with an organic solvent as a washing liquid and then drying the dithionite crystals. The improvement comprises dividing the washing liquid into two portions which are discharged as the washing liquid first discharged and the washing liquid discharged subsequently from the washing operation and treating the washing liquid first discharged to convert substances contained therein which inhibit the production of dithionite into harmless substances and recycling both the treated washing liquid first discharged and the washing liquid discharged subsequently which does not require treatment as a reaction solvent.

Substantially stable aqueous solutions comprise sulfite ions and borohydride ions in a molar ratio of sulfite ions to borohydride ions of at least 6.0 to 1 and contain sufficient hydroxyl ion to give a pH greater than 8. Such solutions have excellent long term storage stability. By reducing the pH to below 8 aqueous hydrosulfite solutions may be generated therefrom and these may be used in bleaching wood pulp, in brightening kaolin clay and in the reduction of vat dyestuffs to their leuco form, either in suspension or in contact with textile materials.

A method for the stabilization of an aqueous choline hydroxide solution includes optionally, adding a first stabilizer of a dithionite salt or a dialkylhydroxylamine to an aqueous solution containing reactants that will produce an aqueous choline hydroxide solution; and after the aqueous choline hydroxide solution is formed, adding a second stabilizer of a dithionite salt or a dialkylhydroxylamine to the aqueous choline hydroxide solution. The stabilized choline hydroxide solution may include choline hydroxide, water, and a dithionite salt and/or a dialkylhydroxylamine as a stabilizer present in an amount of about 100 ppm to about 2000 ppm by weight of the stabilized choline hydroxide solution.
