A method for producing glass sheets by flotation includes the steps of pouring melted glass on a liquid substrate which is denser than the glass, and drawing the glass strip thus formed, wherein flexible continuous guide elements (5) of a solid material capable of adhering to the melted glass engage the lateral edges of the strip and guide the movement thereof. The product (P) of the velocity value (v) and final thickness value (e) of the strip is less than 2.5.10 m .s . The method provides thin glass sheets of constant thickness and satisfactory optical quality.

The present disclosure discloses a float bath that may enhance spreadability of a poured glass melt when pouring the glass melt, an apparatus for manufacturing a float glass comprising the same, a method for manufacturing a float glass using the float bath, and a float glass produced by the method. The float bath according to the present disclosure receives a metal melt and allows a glass melt poured onto the metal melt to float and move from upstream to downstream, and includes a guiding unit provided at a part where the glass melt is poured, to come into contact with the side of the poured glass melt to guide a sidewise spreading path of the glass melt to expand sidewise spreading of the glass melt.

A top roller, which is difficult for a flow path for cooling water to be narrowed or clogged therein, and which is capable of properly working for a long period of time, is provided. A top roller comprising a rotatable leading edge portion, which is adapted to be used for controlling the shrinkage of a molten glass ribbon in a float bath and to be brought into contact with the molten glass ribbon, the leading edge portion having a hollow structure including a leading edge space therein; wherein cooling water having a hardness of at most 100 (mg/L) passes through the leading edge space.

A dragging machine for pulling and stretching glass ribbon in a float process has a fixed frame (6) intended to be fastened to the ground (7) over which a mobile frame (8) is fitted, by means of a vertical swinging shaft (9); a frame (8) overlying on the ground (7) by means of wheels (10), at least one of them being motorised to obtain lateral and automatic swinging both of the frame (8) and the support arm (18) of the dragging truer (5) of the glass sheet. The arm (18) forms part of a turret, longitudinally displaceable over guides (13) and having a trolley (16), in turn being vertically displaceable over vertical guides (15) to automatically control the approach/separation movement of the truer (5) and its ascent/descent movements at the same time that a motor (20) provides the rotational movement.

A continuous glass ribbon is processed by directing the glass ribbon, after formation, into a downstream draw zone and to a transition zone in which the glass ribbon can be bent to radii larger than a minimum bend radius. Different thicknesses of the glass ribbon can be produced in the draw zone. An upstream area of the glass ribbon can be bent to place a first surface of the glass in compression and a downstream area of the glass can be bent to place the first surface of the glass in tension, whereby an intermediate area is substantially free of compression and tension. The glass ribbon can be separated at a first location after the second thickness is reached and at a second location after the final thickness is reached. Glass ribbon having the final thickness can be passed to a third location at which the glass ribbon is collected.

A method for producing a sheet glass, which comprises pouring a molten glass into a bathtub containing a molten metal so that it will form a molten glass stream having a constant width in a high temperature zone on the molten metal bath, and leading the molten glass stream in the form of a ribbon having a desired thickness in a subsequent shaping zone, wherein, in the high temperature zone, the molten metal level in the vicinity of the edge of the molten glass stream is differentiated from the molten metal level at the center of the glass stream to complement a force of the molten glass stream for expanding or contracting in the width direction and thereby to maintain the edge at a predetermined position.
