Hydroxy-t-alkyl peroxyesters having the general structure where R, R 1 , R 2 , R, and R 4 can be alkyl moieties and having 10 hour half-life temperatures below about 75°C (for example, 3-hydroxy-1,1-dimethylbutyl peroxy-neodecanoate) are described. These peroxyesters are used as initiators for vinyl monomer polymerization and as catalysts for curing unsaturated polyester resins in order to improve the efficiency of the systems.

A continuous low pressure gas phase process for the production of solid particulate polymers during an exothermic polymerization reaction in a uniform diameter vertical fluidized bed reactor system which comprises feeding a polymerization catalyst and a gaseous stream containing at least one polymerizable monomer to a fluidized bed of polymer particles and removing the exothermic heat of reaction by indirect cooling means in the reactor and removing dry particulate polymer. A process is described for a method for controlling the temperature of a fluidized bed during the production of polymers in a fluidized bed reactor by an exothermic polymerization reaction, which comprises continuously introducing into the bed a stream of gas cooled to below the maximum desired temperature within said bed and simultaneously or separately introducing a stream of liquid into said reactor under conditions such that an essentially uniform two-phase mixture of said gas and liquid is introduced in said bed at a level below the region of maximum desired temperature within said reactor. This invention also refers to a process for producing polymers from one or more monomers by an exothermic polymerization reaction in a fluidized bed reactor in which the way of operation mentioned above is performed.

A fluidized bed olefin polymerization process incorporates a recycle of a vent gas, containing unreacted monomers, from the product purge bin vessel to the polymerization reactor. The recycle of the vent gas minimizes the loss of unpolymerized reactants, thereby decreasing overall process and product costs.

A catalyst composition for polymerizing alpha-olefins is prepared by treating a carrier containing OH groups with an organomagnesium composition and contacting the thus- formed magnesium-containing carrier with a solution of a titanium (IV) alkoxide and a brominating and/or chlorinating agent. The adjustment of the molar ratio of the brominating and/or chlorinating agent to the titanium alkoxide yields catalysts which produce polymers of varying molecular weight distribution, as measured by the melt flow ratio (MFR) values.
