A process for preparing an aqueous resin dispersion includes the steps of copolymerizing a polymeric monomer whose ratio of (meth) acrolein to a total amount of the (meth) acrolein and a vinyl monomer is in the range from 10 weight% to 80 weight% in an organic solvent to obtain a copolymer solution, dispersing the obtained copolymer solution in an aqueous medium and removing an unreacted (meth) acrolein. Since the above process can extremely reduce contents of the unreacted (meth) acrolein and of an oligomer whose number-average molecular weight is less than 1000, an aqueous resin dispersion where problems of a pungent smell, toxicological properties, etc. due to the (meth) acrolein and the oligomer are eliminated can be provided.

A resin composition which comprises: (1) a vinyl copolymer obtained from materials comprising (a) a vinyl monomer containing at least one carbonyl or aldehyde group and (b) a copolymerizable vinyl monomer; (2) either a hydrazide derivative represented by the general formula (I) (wherein R represents (un)substituted phenylene or (un)substituted cyclohexylene or alkylene, and R and R are the same or different and each represents a single bond or alkylene) or the hydrazide derivative in which the amino groups have been protected by a low-molecular carbonyl compound; and (3) either a polyamine compound represented by the general formula (II) (wherein R represents (un)substituted phenylene or (un)substituted cyclohexylene or alkylene, and R and R are the same or different and each represents a single bond or alkylene) or the polyamine compound in which the amino groups have been protected by a low-molecular carbonyl compound.

A method for the preparation of polymers derived from acrolein and including poly(2-propenal, 2-propenoic acid), characterised in that the polymers are exposed to the presence of water, whereby such polymers exhibit increased antimicrobial activity. The polymers may be heated in the range of 40 to 150 °C. Further, the polymers may be prepared in the presence of polyethylene glycols, polyols and/or alkanols.
