    摘要: A catalyzed interfacial polycondensation aromatic polycarbonate process comprising mixing a water soluble metal salt of a dihydric phenol with an aqueous solution of a strong base and a polymerization catalyst in an inert organic solvent; heating the mixture; concurrently adding a carbonyl halide, additional strong base and additional water soluble metal salt of a dihydric phenol to the heated mixture to form the cyclic oligomeric polycarbonate; and recovering the cyclic oligomeric polycarbonate. The preferred process utilizes the di-sodium salt of bisphenol-A, triethylamine polymerization catalyst and methylene chloride solvent with phosgene to form the cyclic oligomeric polycarbonates. The cyclic oligomeric polycarbonate products are accummulated in the organic phase of the reaction mixture and recovered therefrom by conventional techniques.

    摘要: Homo- and copolycarbonates of spirobiindane bisphenols are prepared by first reacting phosgene with a substantially pure spirobiindane bisphenol in the presence of aqueous base in a heterogeneous medium at a pH in the range of about 9-11, and subsequently adding an interfacial polycarbonate formation catalyst and, optionally, a dihy­droxyaromatic compound and a chain termination agent and continuing phosgene passage at a pH of at least about 10. By this method, there may be prepared homo- and copolycar­bonates of 6,6'-dihydroxy-3,3,3',3'-tetramethyl-1,1-spiro­(bis)indane having high molecular weight. Said homopoly­carbonates and copolycarbonates with bisphenol A may be used for manufacture of optical disks having low birefringence.

    摘要: A polyether polycarbonate block copolymer nonionic surface-active agent and method for making the same. The polyether polycarbonate surface active agent is comprised of a hydrophilic portion comprised of a polymer selected from the group consisting of a polyoxyalkylene polyether, a saccharide, a saccharide polyoxyalkylenate, a polycarbonate having a carbon dioxide content of from about 1 to 15 molar percent and mixtures thereof and a hydrophobic portion comprising alkylene and carbonate units arranged in alter­nating or random order to form a poly(alkylene carbonate) having a total carbon dioxide content of from about 25 to 50 molar percent and a total molecular weight of from about 300 to 10,000. The hydrophobic portion is bonded to the hydrophilic portion at each side of a reactive hydrogen. The surface active agent is prepared by polymerizing the hydrophilic portion with the hydrophobic portion in a weight ratio of about 10:90 to 90:10.

    The benzodioxylmethine residues are present in the polymer as an integral part of the polymer chain and absorb ultraviolet radiation in the range of about 250 to about 390 nm. The residues are non-­extractable from the polymer and stable at the conditions at which the polymers are manufactured and processed.

    摘要: Block polyphenylene ether-polycarbonates are prepared by blending a mixture of at least one polyphenylene ether wherein all phenolic end groups are in the free phenol form; at least one cyclic polycarbonate oligomer, preferably an oligomer mixture; and a catalyst for conversion of cyclic polycarbonates to linear polycarbonates; and heating said mixture to polymerization temperature. The preferred catalysts are phenoxides, salts of polycarbonate oligomers and tetraphenylborate salts. The method may be conducted in the melt or in solution, and is adaptable for employment in reactive processing operations.
