The purpose of the present invention is to provide: a polycarbonate resin which has a narrow molecular weight distribution and in which the formation of low molecular weight oligomers is suppressed; and a method for producing the polycarbonate resin. According to the present invention, provided are a polycarbonate resin containing a structural unit represented by general formula (1), wherein the molecular weight distribution value (Mw/Mn) is 6.0 or less, and the content of oligomers having a molecular weight of less than 1,000 is suppressed to 0.50 mass% or less; and a method for producing the polycarbonate. A molded article includes a polycarbonate resin, an ultraviolet (UV) absorbing component, a heat stabilizer component and an acid stabilizer component. The polycarbonate resin is produced by an interfacial polymerization process and has an endcap level of at least about 98%, and includes a ratio of bound UV absorbing component to free UV absorbing component of less than about 1.0 when molded under abusive molding conditions. The polycarbonate resin may include high purity polycarbonate. The acid stabilizer component may include a sulfonic acid ester. Methods of forming molded articles are also described.

A method for decomposing a waste aromatic polycarbonate by an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide and producing an aqueous solution of an alkali metal salt of an aromatic dihydroxy compound, which comprises (1) a dissolution step of dissolving the waste aromatic polycarbonate into a chlorinated hydrocarbon solvent, (2) a decomposition step of adding an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide to the resultant solution, to decompose the aromatic polycarbonate, (3) a re- dissolution step of adding water to the liquid decomposed product to dissolve solids, (4) a two-phase forming step of allowing the resultant liquid product from the previous step to stand, to thereby form an organic solvent phase (an organic phase) and an aqueous solution phase (water phase), and (5) a separation and recovery step of separating the water phase from the organic solvent phase and recovering the water phase. The above method allows an aqueous solution of a metal salt of an aromatic dihydroxy compound having high quality and thus being useful as a raw material for a polycarbonate to be produced from a waste aromatic polycarbonate, with a short decomposition time, at a low cost, and thus, advantageously from an industrial view point.

A process for producing polycarbonate through transesterification using, as the polymerization catalyst: (1) a combination of a nitrogenous organic base compound and a quaternary phosphonium salt, (2) a tetraarylphosphonium salt having a specific structure or (3) a quaternary phosphonium salt having a specific structure bearing a branched alkyl group; and a process for producing polycarbonate comprising preparing a polycarbonate prepolymer by prepolymerization and subjecting the prepolymer to solid-phase polymerization using a quaternary phosphonium salt as the catalyst. According to these processes, a high-quality polycarbonate excellent in appearance, resistances to heat and hydrolysis and so on can be produced extremely efficiently.
