A method of treating wool and/or other natural fibres with a chemical compound, the compound undergoing photoyellowing at a similar rate to the rate at which the wool and/or natural fibres undergoes photobleaching. The chemical compound is applied in an amount which ensures the photoyellowing of the chemical compound cancels out the photobleaching of the natural fibres. The chemical compounds are preferably syntans and may consist of condensation products of aromatic sulphonic and/or sulphonic acids. Other suitable compounds include optical brightening agents, tannins, and aromatic sulphonic acids.

A method of treating carpet and other textile products comprising animal fibres or a mix of synthetic fibres and animal fibres. The method includes applying a formulation to carpet or other textile products. The formulation comprises compounds effective against the larvae of a range of Coleopteran species and a chemical which is effective against the larvae of a range of Lepidopteran species. The fluorosurfactant compound can offer only partial control of the larvae of a range of Lepidopteran species. The formulation can be added to the carpet, yarn, loose fibre or other textiles during raw-wool scouring, dyeing, tapescouring, chemsetting or continuous carpet treatment.

A method of stabilizing a hygral expansion of a protein fiber product which comprises the steps of preparing a water-soluble solution by dissolving a polyoxirane derivative of PEGDE or PPGDE having a water solubility of 95 wt.% or above in a solvent which has a solubility parameter of 13.0-10.1 (cal/cm3)1/2 and a boiling point of 101-190 C and is freely miscible with water, preparing a treatment solution by adding to the obtained solution an aqueous solution containing at least two catalysts for oxirane compounds selected from the group consisting of dicyanodiamide, hydroxy carboxylic acid salts, thiocyanic acid salts and L-cysteines, dipping a protein fiber product in the treatment solution followed by dehydration, cross-linking the dehydrated fiber product with the polyoxirane derivative by heat treating the fiber product, and removing by-products from the heat-treated fiber product. This method serves to stabilize a hygral expansion of a protein fiber product with more certainty and remove difficultly water-soluble by-products formed by the heat treatment.

A method of increasing the SPF rating of a fibre or fabric, comprising the steps of providing a UVR absorber, applying the UVR absorber to a fabric having a density of less than 200 grams per square metre, whereby the UVR absorber is attached to the fibre and an application of less thant 3 % UVR absorber on weight of fibre produces an SPF rating of greater than 20 for the UVR absorber and fabric combination.

PCT No. PCT/AU93/00412 Sec. 371 Date Jun. 15, 1995 Sec. 102(e) Date Jun. 15, 1995 PCT Filed Aug. 12, 1993 PCT Pub. No. WO94/04515 PCT Pub. Date Mar. 3, 1994The present invention provides a method of increasing the sun protection factor (SPF) rating of a fiber or fabric, comprising the steps of providing a UVR absorber, applying the UVR absorber to a fabric, whereby the UVR absorber is attached to the fiber and an application of less than 3% UVR absorber on weight of fiber produces an SPF rating of greater than 20 for the UVR absorber and fabric combination.
