摘要:
A cam shaft assembly (50), which engages a plurality of cam followers (51) which operate valves (52) of an internal combustion engine. The cam shaft assembly (50) has a rotatably driven central shaft (56) to which a first cam lobe (57) is attached. An outer tubular shaft (58) has attached to it a further lobe (59). The shafts (56 and 58) are angularly displaceable to angularly displace the lobes (57 and 59) to alter valve timing and dwell angle.

Valve gear for an internal combustion engine includes a first cam (15) mounted to rotate about a first axis, a second cam (21) mounted to rotate about a second axis which is substantially parallel to the first axis, a phase-change mechanism arranged selectively to vary the phase of one of the cams relative to the other, a valve member (29) movable along a valve axis (30), a spring urging the valve member in a first direction along the valve axis and a cam follower (25) which has first and second contact surfaces (18,24) arranged to be engaged by the first and second cams, respectively, and is arranged to transmit movement from the cams to the valve member but is movable with respect to the valve member. The profile of the first cam (15) includes an ascending portion (202) to move the valve member (29) in a second direction opposite to the first direction and a descending ramp (203) to control movement of the cam follower with respect to the valve member. The profile of the second cam (21) includes a descending portion (200) to control movement of the valve member in the first direction and an ascending ramp (201) to control movement of the cam follower with respect to the valve member. The gradient of the ascending ramp (201) and of the descending ramp (203) are substantially the same over at least part of their length. The phase of the two cams is such that the times for which the ascending and descending ramps contact the follower at least partially overlap at a time during which the valve member is stationary in the closed position. This means that the cam follower moves with respect to the valve member and that the cams remain substantially in contact with the cam follower at all times.

A valve actuating mechanism is disposed in a four-stroke cycle engine comprises a rotatable rocker shaft (11) having eccentric large-diameter portions formed as bushings (12,13) on the way of the rocker shaft, a rocker arm assembly including a first rocker arm (7) rotatably mounted directly on the rocker shaft (11) and second and third rocker arms (8,9) rotatably mounted on the eccentric bushings of the rocker shaft with the first rocker arm being interposed therebetween, and a cam assembly including first, second and third cam members (3,4,5) which drives the first, second and third rocker arms, (7,8,9) respectively. The first rocker arm is provided with a branched distal end and the second and third rocker arms each is provided with a distal end which are laid upon each other. The second and third cams have the same cam profiles and the first cam has a cam profile different from those of the second and third cams. A play adjusting screw means (33,34) is provided for either one of the support portion of the first rocker arm and the support portions of the second and third rocker arms and a screw means receiving portion is provided for other one of the suportion of the first rocker arm and the support portions of the second and third rocker arms in a manner such that a clearance between a distal end of the play adjusting means and the screw receiving portion is adjusted.

A valve actuator such as an hydraulic tappet. In one embodiment the tappet comprises a cylinder (16) which defines by means of a central wall (17), upper and lower chambers (18, 19). These have respective pistons (20 and 21). Piston (20) is connected to an actuator rod (13) of a valve (11), whilst piston (21) rides on a cam (23). The central wall is formed with two flow paths (24 and 25). The first allows oil to flow from the chamber (19) to the chamber (18) during upward movement of the piston (21) and hence the cam can cause lifting movement of the piston (20) and opening of the valve (11). As the cam (23) falls away the valve (11) closes under the action of spring (14) which results in downward movement of the upper piston (20). The rate of this return is dictated by the rate at which oil can flow through the passage (25) which can be variably restricted by control element (27). Thus, by adjustment of the control element (27) the rate of closing of the valve (11) can be varied. Other embodiments are described but in each the return movement of the upper piston (20) is variably damped.
