A duel fuel system for use with internal combustion engines comprising (a) a manually actuated dual fuel valve (300), (b) a liquified gas to gaseous fuel converter (1) combining a liquified fuel lock-off valve (2) responsive to engine vacuum and a fuel metering valve responsive to a predetermined positive pressure modulated by engine vaccum, and (c) a positive pressure gaseous fuel and air mixer (200) having a compact plunger structure in which the fuel valve (207) is located within the air valve structure. In one embodiment, the mixer (100) employs a relatively large piston (204) which travels a relatively short distance to meter the flow of air between the lower surface of the piston and a coaxial annular surface. A second embodiment of the mixer (100) utilizes a smaller diameter piston which travels a relatively longer distance, but which utilizes a relatively flat plunger to meter air flow. The fuel valve carried by the plunger structure may be of the needle valve (206) or slotted tube/type (460) and may serve as a guide for the air valve structure. Separate air and fuel controls are provided for engine idle, and a portion of the fuel valve structure is replaceable to accomodate gaseous fuels with different physical properties.

System for improving performance of spark ignition, internal combustion engines using fuels such as liquified petroleum gas (LP-gas), which have conventionally been stored as a liquid and delivered to the engine as a vapor. This system stores such fuels as liquids (10) and delivers the fuel to the engine inlet air stream as a liquid. The absorption of heat by the vaporizing fuel lowers engine inlet air temperature, increasing its density and permitting more fuel to be burned in each cycle. Vaporizing heat in a pilot line (17) provides the cooling to the liquid fuel in the main fuel line (20) and provides fuel to maintain the engine idling. A member (27) slides within a fuel delivery chamber (25) for covering or uncovering a series of orifices (26) through which the liquid fuel passes into the inlet air stream of the engine.

During gaseous fuel operation gas pressure in the chamber (62) maintains the inner plate (53) adjacent the adapter plate (27) to form therewith an annular venturi (58) into which gaseous fuel from the chamber (62) is admitted through a ring of ports (63) through the inner plate (53) at the venturi (58). During liquid fuel operation incoming air lowers the pressure in the chamber (62) sufficiently so that the inner plate (53) automatically moves away from the adapter plate (27) to provide an unobstructed air only path to the engine (10).
