Abstract:
A clothes dryer apparatus (99) comprising an electrically conductive, grounded, generally cylindrical rotatable drum (13) having a hollow interior adapted to contain a load (15) of wet clothes to be dried. The drum's (13) exterior surface (27) is partially indented to form one or more integral, generally ring-shaped insulated notches (10). An electrically conductive, generally flat arcuate anode (11) is positioned within each notch (10), with no physical contact between an anode (11) and its corresponding notch (10). Each anode (11) is spatially fixed with respect to the rotatable drum (13), and is electrically isolated from conductive portions of the drum (13). A source (21) of RF power (12), operating at a single fixed frequency, is coupled to each anode (11).
Abstract:
A heating apparatus for removing volatiles from a saturated adsorbent is provided. The heating apparatus can include a vessel including a first end and a second end. The vessel can be adapted to receive the saturated adsorbent. The heating apparatus can also include a channel in communication with the first end of the vessel and a radiation source that provides energy to heat the vessel. The heating apparatus can further comprise a lateral waveguide coupled to the radiation source and disposed within the channel to transmit the energy from the radiation source to the vessel to heat the saturated adsorbent disposed within the vessel.
Abstract:
A process for the manufacture of a product useful as an artificial soil, soil conditioner or peat substitute, effected by subjecting an aqueous mixture containing a substantially solid feed excrement from animals and water to treatment with an alternating electric current at a frequency of a predetermined magnitude and for a predetermined period of time, such that an odorless solid product capable of absorbing several times its own weight of water is recoverable by water removal.

Abstract:
A combination infrared/convection dryer or oven (10) for drying travelling webs (W). A shutter assembly (8) is provided between the infrared radiation source (16) and the moving web in order to selectively expose the web to infrared radiation. Drying efficiency is optimized by adding heated impinged air at high velocity on the machine direction ends and between the infrared elements. The air being discharged on the web is heated as it is pulled across the elements to a centralized return air duct (42). The return air is pulled into the inlet of a close coupled supply fan (28) which then discharges the air to the nozzles. A portion of the air is also exhausted at atmosphere to maintain the oven enclosure in a negative pressure state, thus drawing fresh make-up air into the oven housing through the web inlet (12) and outlet (13) slots. Flotation nozzles (151, 152) can be used where contactless support of the running web is desired. Enhanced drying of the web and/or a coating on the web at high speed is achieved without a concomitant increase in dryer length.
Abstract:
The invention is directed at an apparatus and method for microwave heating of a ceramic such that an adjustable power microwave source (11) for directing microwave power into a continuous throughput microwave cavity (22). The apparatus further includes a microwave power control system (55) for variably controlling the power that is delivered to the microwave cavity. The reflected power detector measures the value of the reflected power from the cavity and compares that reflected power output value to a preset reflected output value to generate an output signal indicative of the difference in measured and set reflected values. The second component of this system comprises a microwave controller that receives the output signal from the reflected power detector controller and adjusts the power of the adjustable microwave so that the reflected power output signal is maintained at or near the preset output signal value.
Abstract:
A combination infrared/air convection dryer or oven for travelling webs. A shutter assembly (40) is provided between the infrared radiation source (17) and the moving web in order to selectively expose the web to infrared radiation, and to create a sealed air chamber (19) when in the closed position. Enhanced drying of the web and/or a coating on the web at high speed is achieved without a concomitant increase in dryer length. When the drying atmosphere has a high concentration of solvent, exposure of that atmosphere to the heating elements, which can cause explosions, is eliminated by actuation of the shutters. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, air bars are used to floatingly support the moving web to avoid contact of the web with dryer elements.
Abstract:
A radio frequency (RF) assisted floatation air bar dryer apparatus (10) and method for drying and/or curing a traveling web (11) includes RF generating means for delivering RF through field and RF stray field to the web (11) to heat the web (11), air bars (21) to direct air flow to the web (11) for cooling to facilitate emission of moisture therefrom and to avoid blistering due to overheating, an RF field reflector to reflect RF energy to the web (11), and a control system to monitor and to control air temperature and/or flow, RF field strength, and/or web temperature to maintain a balance between heating and cooling to obtain efficient high speed drying while avoiding damage to the web (11).
