Disclosed is an ultrasonic diagnostic apparatus for detecting variations of an acoustic characteristic to obtain the fluctuation of temperature within a body to be examined. The ultrasonic diagnostic apparatus includes an ultrasonic transducer (l0; 80, 8l; 90, 92) for transmitting an ultrasonic wave and receiving the reflected ultrasonic wave which is in then converted into an electric signal. The signal is phase-detected (l4, l5) in accordance with a plurality of gate intervals or a plurality of window intervals to detect a phase difference therebetween. The relative variation of velocity distribution shown before and after heating of the body is obtained on the basis of the phase variation resulting from the variation of the ultrasonic drive frequency.

A counter 47 is provided to count an expected 32 pulses in a pulse train comprising a signal received atA and passing through an AND gate 60 when enabled. However if the pulses in the leading and trailing edges are of low amplitude they may be below a threshold level and thus be missed so that the counter 47 will not reach the required count of 32. However when the sequence of pulses terminates a counter 62 is then able to reach a full count of three upon receipt of pulses from an oscillator 64 transmitted at twice the frequency of the pulses in the signal. This releases a latch 58 so that the oscillator pulses can pass through the AND gate 65 to the counter 47 so that the count is completed. Since the losses of pulses at the beginning and end of the signal are expected to be symmetrical addition of pulses at twice the frequency in the counter 47 to those already received from a signal will compensate for the pulses lost at the beginning and end of the signal and will ensure that the output from the counter 47 occurs approximately at the same instant when the end of the trailing edge of the signal is reached. Hence the output from the counter 47 is a true reflection of the timing of receipt of the signal.

A detecting apparatus using ultrasonic waves comprises a sensor unit (4) and a signal processing unit (1) for processing a reception signal (B1) sent from the sensor unit (4) to output a detection signal. These units (1, 4) are connected by a cable (9) having three core wires (9a, 9b, 9c). A power supply signal (A2), an ultrasonic transmission signal (A1) and operation indication signal (A3) are multiplexed to the first core wire (9a) and transmitted from the signal processing unit (1) to the sensor unit (4). An ultrasonic reception signal (B1) and a temperature detection signal (B2) are multiplexed to the second core wire (9b) and transmitted from the sensor unit (4) to the signal processing unit (1). The third core wire (9c) is used to connect the grounding levels of both units (1, 4).

A method and apparatus of enhancing the accuracy of in vivo sound velocity estimation by identifying segments of different sound velocity along a tracked ultrasound beam. The effects of refraction on the tracked beam at the interface between tissue regions are estimated. Also disclosed is a technique for estimating the refractive effects of naturally occurring and artificially introduced acoustical contrast fluids. The accuracy of the sound velocity measurements is increased by utilizing the centroid-to-centroid distance between the pulses produced by ultrasound sending and receiving transducers in calculating the ultrasound beam velocity.

A wobbling processor (64) is provided in an address generator for write operation (6). When the echo signals, orthe image signals obtained by the scanning of the central untrasonic scanning lines are written into pixels of a frame memory, the write-in addresses are processed by the wobbling processor (64) so that the pixelizing precision can be uniformed over the entire scanning region.

An annular array ultrasonic transducer is provided which comprises a plurality of concentric rings of piezoelectric material having widths chosen for operation at different depths of focus. The total aperture of the transducer is divided into a plurality of contiguous focal depths. In the near field only the inner element or elements are activated, and rings of increasing radius are added as the depth of focus is increased. The widths of the rings are chosen to keep phase errors across each ring within acceptable limits over the depth of field for which they are energized. The transition depths at which the aperture is changed are chosen to allow rings of manufacturable widths to be employed while maintaining aperture transitions which prevent banding in the ultrasonic image.

A circuit for determining the cross-correlation function between two digitally sampled signals comprises a plurality of fractional step delay (FSD) digital interpolation filters (86, 87, 88) which estimate the value of one of said input signals at intervals between said samples and a plurality of correlation circuits (89-97) each of which determined the correlation between the first signal and the output of one of said interpolation filters. A device for ultrasound flow mapping comprising such a circuit has an improved accuracy.
