During recording of an information signal along parallel tracks (150) on the medium a deviation of the reference track in a transverse direction from its nominal position with respect to the medium transport is detected by one or more sensor heads (51a, 51b) mounted in a fixed relationship with respect to the medium transport. A positionably mounted data head (143) is moved in transverse direction in accordance with the sense and magnitude of the detected deviation, thereby maintaining the data head in a known geometric relationship with the reference track during the recording process. During playback the same reference track may be utilized to follow the thusly recorded parallel tracks.

The carriage slide assembly comprises a movable member (56) mounted to the carriage and a fixed member (54) mounted to the mainframe. A plurality of roller bearings (122) are retained within the slide assembly between the movable and fixed members in a manner to allow the movable member to move relative to the fixed member while providing a tight coupling therebetween. The slide assembly is designed such that its orientation with respect to the carriage element can be varied, orientation selection being determined by space and the disc drive manufacturing considerations. The fixed member may be formed as part of the mainframe to further reduce system costs.
