A control system for a stepper motor utilized in positioning a transducer (18) in relationship to a plurality of parallel tracks (14, 16) on a record media (10). Dual closed loop feedback systems are provided. A current control circuit is provided having a high output impedance and a voltage control circuit is provided having a low output impedance. A switch (30) may select the current control sensor (28) when the transducer (18) is making coarse adjustments in position and may select the voltage control sensor (32) when the transducer (18) is making fine adjustments in position. A seamless switchover may be achieved where the voltage control sensor (32) has a time constant which matches the time constant of the stepper motor. Performance is further improved by providing an impedance cancellation circuit (252, 254, 256, 258, 260, 262) which eliminates the internal resistance of the motor in order to quickly damp motionally induced emf of the motor.

This time is the settling time. Before the rotor passes through the next target angular position and begins to oscillate, necessary Icontrol means is taken to reduce the width of the oscillation for the purpose of shortening the settling time. The phase excitation on each winding (φ 1 , φ 2 ) of the stepping motor is usually changed over successively until the target angular position is reached. When the stepping motor has approached the target angular position, the changeover of phase excitation is gradually conducted. As a result, the width of the above described oscillation is reduced and hence the settling time is shortened.

A driving circuit for a four phases (1, 2, 3, 4) step motor, where each stable rotor position is reached by suitably energizing the series of two of the four phases, comprises a circuit (22) which controls the current in the energized phases by comparing a current related signal with a reference signal. Particularly, such circuit disconnects the series of two phases from the power supply and ground when the energization current reaches a predetermined upper threshold value and connect it again to the power supply and ground when the energization current, which is maintained in the phases through recycle diodes (9, 10, 11, 12), falls below a predetermined lower threshold value. In such way the energization current within the phases is kept nearly constant and this reduces to a minimum the winding copper losses, under the same mechanical performances. The cross configuration of the windings, with a current sensor (19) in the center of the cross, further enables to reduce to a minimum number the components of the control circuits.
