A crystal oscillator-based module, which includes a crystal resonator receiving a conditioned signal from a first bus and passing a resonator signal to a sustaining stage amplifier. A synchronization range expansion circuit is connected between a gain control network and the resonator. A tri-state buffer has a main input connected to receive the resonator signal through a buffer. The output of the tri-state buffer is connected to a second bus, through a matching network if necessary. A synchronous clock system can be formed by connecting these modules alternately to the two busses. The tri-state buffer also has a control input, which may be connected to a delay circuit between Vcc and ground, so as to allow hot swapping and for other benefits.

In a magnetron having a rotatable tuning member in the form of a spinner (121), a rotation sensor and an associated processor (10) generates an indication signal (11) representing the instantaneous magnetron frequency. Three level discriminators 13(1), 13(2), 13(3) are arranged to compare the indication signal (11) with respective threshold signals 14(1), 14(2), 14(3) representing different, preset frequencies. The level discriminators produce a trigger signal T effective to initiate transmission of a pulse of radiation whenever the instantaneous magnetron frequency matches one of the preset frequencies.

The feedback circuit (20) includes a modulated laser (30) having an input responsive to a portion (16) of a signal from the output of the oscillator (12), and a photo detector (34) having an input responsive to an output signal from the modulated laser (30) delayed (32) by a predetermined amount of time. A detector (28) has a first input responsive to the output of the photo detector (34), a second input responsive to a portion of the output signal from the oscillator (12) shifted (26) in phase to be in phase quadrature with the signal at the first input of the detector (28). The output of the detector (28) is coupled to the control port (44) of the oscillator (12). The output signal from the detector (28) is only zero when there is no difference between the phase shifted signal from the phase shifter (26) and the delayed signal from the photo detector (34).
