    Abstract: Provided is an optical receiver comprising: a heterodyne detection unit that converts a sub-carrier multiplexing signal, in which a plurality of optical signals transmitted from a plurality of optical transmitters are multiplexed, into an electric signal having an intermediate frequency band by means of heterodyne detection; a filter unit that extracts a sub-carrier component excluding a carrier component from the electric signal converted into the intermediate frequency band; an analog-to-digital conversion unit that converts a signal of the sub-carrier component extracted by the filter unit from an analog signal into a digital signal; and a digital signal processing unit that performs digital signal processing on each sub-carrier using the digital signal converted by the analog-to-digital conversion unit.

    Abstract: A feed signal generator (10) for a phased array antenna, comprising: an input (12) to receive an optical spectrum having first and second phase-locked spectral components, respectively having first and second optical frequencies; wavelength selective separator apparatus (14) to separate the optical spectrum into a first optical signal being the first spectral component and a second optical signal being the second spectral component; an optical time delay element (16) to apply a time delay to the first optical signal to form a delayed optical signal; a heterodyning device (20) to heterodyne the delayed optical signal and the second optical signal to generate a feed signal (22) having a power proportional to a product of the amplitudes of the second and delayed optical signals and a phase proportional to the time delay; and optical amplitude control apparatus (18) to set an amplitude of the delayed optical signal such that the product of said amplitudes causes the power of the feed signal to have a preselected value.

    Abstract: An optical receiver (30) comprising an optical combiner (40) for combining an optical signal carrying data having a center frequency with local oscillator light having a local oscillator frequency into a combined optical signal. A local oscillator (32) provides the local oscillator light whose frequency is controlled to be fixed proximate to the edge of the wavelength channel. A polarizing beam splitter (42) splits the combined optical signal and directs each component to an opto-electrical converter (36) which output electrical signals carrying the data at an offset frequency, which is the difference between the center frequency and the local oscillator frequency. The receiver bandwidth of the opto-electrical converters (36) are substantially similar to a wavelength channel bandwidth. The two electrical signals output by the opto-electrical converters (36) are directed to respective envelope detectors (48A, 48B), one inverting and one non-inverting, whose outputs are combined by a subtractor (46).
