A chrominance signal processing apparatus used for such as the color television signal recording and reproducing apparatus (VTR) to record and reproduce a color television signal, comprises means (2,3,26,17,24) for converting a carrier chrominance signal (fsc) to a low-band signal (fc) for recording, and, for reproduction, means (27,16,13) for reconverting the converted low-band signal (fc) to the carrier chrominance signal (fsc) of the original color subcarrier frequency, to thereby record and reproduce the chrominance signal. Means (40, 41, 42, 43) for detecting the burst in the carrier chrominance signal (fsc) necessary for the level adjustment of the chrominance signal or for the control of the conversion frequency or for discrimination of black and white signal under a state of the low-band converted chrominance signal during recording and reproduction, the level detection, phase detection, and synchronous detection in low frequency are made possible. Further, the level detection, phase detection, and synchronous detection are carried out after once demodulating the low-band converted chrominance signal into two color difference signals in the base band to thereby use a part of circuit in common and improve performance. Furthermore, by performing digital sampling demodulation for demodulating the low-band inverted burst into the base band by means of an AID converter and digital circuits, integration of digital LSis, combined used of detection circuits, detection circuits and a part of frequency conversion circuits, realization of any non-linear characteristics and reduction of external parts such as analog filters become possible of the chrominance signal processing apparatus. Accordingly, a small and inexpensive chrominance signal processing apparatus of low consumption power is realized.

An all-pass filter provides inversion of a chrominance component in a composite signal without separating the chrominance component from the composite signal, to provide for example, synthesizing composite video from a previous line of video. The filter includes an input (26') for receiving the composite signal along a subsequent signal path, and the application of selected, preferably symmetrical weighting factors to selected locations along the signal path. The path includes selected delay means (58-64) coupled to define a filter output via summing means (66). The latter provides the composite signal with inverted chrominance without an objectionable change in the relative phase and amplitude of the luminance components relative to the inverted chrominance.

A color video signal recording system comprises means (5, 6) for producing a quadrature two-phase balance-modulated color signal by subjecting a subcarrier to quadrature two-phase balanced modulation by two color signals, means (10) for producing a demodulation-purpose reference phase signal which has the same frequency as that of the subcarrier and which is to be frequency-interleaved with said quadrature two-phase balance-modulated color signal, means for multiplexing said quadrature two-phase balance-modulated color signal and said demodulation-purpose reference phase signal together with a carrier luminance signal, and means (14) for recording said multiplex signal. The system minimizes deviation of hues from the original as well as that of color saturation from the original and eliminates drop-out or missing of color information, thereby ensuring a high quality of reproduced pictures.

An apparatus and method for generating video signals, including a high-definition component that has a reduced bandwidth, are disclosed. One form of video apparatus for generating video signals representative of images of a scene, comprises: first video imaging means (140; 521) and second video imaging means (130; 522, 523, 524); optical means (111; 512, 513, 516, 517) for directing light from the scene to the first and second video imaging means; means for scanning the first video imaging means (140; 521) at a relatively fast scan rate; and means for scanning the second video imaging means (130; 522, 523, 524) at a relatively slow scan rate. The first video imaging means may be a high-definition monochrome television camera and the second video imaging means a standard-resolution colour television camera. Alternatively, CCD camera chips (521, 522, 523, 524) may be used. One embodiment uses an optical switching system which makes efficient use of available light from a scene being imaged. Video recording techniques which save bandwidth, and a temporal filter which is tailored to the eye's temporal response are also disclosed.
