The invention relates to a ribbon guide section for electronic printers, especially stylus printers, which contains the ribbon guide for the printer. So far, the ribbon (3) was pushed into the basic position over a bevel on the printing head (5) when the ribbon guide was fitted. This can lead to movement of the ribbon resulting in creasing or folding. To prevent this drawback, the invention provides for a ribbon deflector consisting of a rotatably spring-loaded component with two symmetrically arranged slides (2) over which the ribbon (3) runs in such a way that it is spread by the nose (4) of the printing head before being pushed on the printing head support (13). The rotatable, spring-loaded component is tilted backwards on being pushed on the printing head support and thus the slides (2) is set to its inoperative position so that the ribbon (3) bears directly on the nose (4) of the printing head.

A web guidance mechanism (14) for automatically centering a web (12) in a thermal printer has an elongated base member (22) with first and second end portions each defining a slot (24,26). A crank (28) is rotatably mounted on the base member (22) and has slider arms (30,34) attached thereto. Web guides (32,36) are mounted on the distal end portions of the slider arms (30,34) and are engagable with the slots (24,26) for lateral movement. A coil spring (38) biases the web guides (32,36) towards one another to create two normally equal but opposite centering edge forces (F1,F2) so that lateral movement of the web (12) does not occur until twice the nominal edge force is applied to the web (12).

Namely, the present invention provides an ink sheet cassette (1) removably mounted in a recording apparatus for using an ink sheet (2) to print on a recording medium (16), the aforementioned cassette including an ink sheet supply portion supporting an ink sheet to be supplied, an ink sheet wind-up portion for winding the ink sheet from the ink sheet supply portion after the ink sheet has been moved past a recording position at which a recording operation is carried out, a drive power receiving portion for receiving a drive power causing the ink sheet wind-up portion to wind the ink sheet, a device for defining the path of the ink sheet, the defining device being located at a position downstream of the recording position in a direction in which the ink sheet is moved from the ink sheet supply portion to the ink sheet wind-up portion, and a device for shifting the defining device to change the path of ink sheet from one to another. In a dye transfer printer, a donor web having successive dye transfer areas and opposite longitudinal edge areas alongside each one of the dye transfer areas is subjected to a longitudinal tension when the donor web is advanced in the printer. The longitudinal tension can stretch the dye transfer areas more than the edge areas because the dye transfer areas, but not the edge areas, are heated at a print head. According to the invention, the resistance of the edge areas relative to the dye transfer areas, to being stretched, is weakened so that the edge areas can be stretched substantially the same as the dye transfer areas. If the edge areas alongside a dye transfer area being used are stretched substantially the same as the dye transfer area, the likelihood of any creases being created in the next unused transfer area is substantially reduced. Thus, no line artifacts will be printed on a dye receiver during dye transfer in the printer.

Method and associated apparatus for positioning a thermal donor media, having a plurality of transfer panels, each having a transfer area that is greater than the total area of a number of receiving media, such that a single transfer panel can provide an area of donor exclusively to each of the number of receiving media. The dimensions of unused areas of the thermal donor media are matched with the dimensions of the next to-be-printed image to enable a transfer printing to take place at an area that has dimensions that are equal to or greater than that required for the printed image. When an available area is identified the thermal donor media is moved into alignment and the transfer takes place. In one embodiment of the invention the thermal donor media is in the form of a ribbon that is wound between driven spools to bring unused areas into vertical printing alignment with the receiving media and the receiving media is displaced transverse to the ribbon to provide a horizontal alignment.
