The present invention relates to a catalytically active material for ammonia synthesis obtainable by reducing a precursor material having a phase pure spinel structure which itself is obtainable by heating an intermediate having a layered double hydroxide (LDH) structure. The present invention is also directed to a method of forming the catalytically active material and to a method of synthesizing ammonia, decomposing ammonia or both when using the catalytically active material. Moreover, the present invention is concerned with the use of the catalytically active material in the synthesis of ammonia, decomposition of ammonia or both as well as the use of the intermediate and the precursor material in the preparation of the catalytically active material for ammonia synthesis.

A system for storage and dosing of ammonia, including a solid ammonia storage material capable of binding and releasing ammonia reversibly by adsorption/absorption. The system is able to release ammonia gradually according to a demand that can vary over time with intermediate periods of no ammonia demand. A main storage unit and a start-up storage unit are provided. The storage units hold ammonia storage material. At least one one-way valve is provided via which the one main storage unit is in communication with the start-up storage unit. The one-way valve prevents any back-flow of ammonia from the start-up storage unit to the main storage unit. Heating devices are arranged to heat the main storage unit and the start-up storage unit separately to generate gaseous ammonia by thermal desorption from the solid storage material. A controller controls the heating power of the main storage unit and the start-up storage unit, thereby enabling ammonia release from the start-up and/or the main storage units. The invention related to a material that can stably hold an imide anion (NH 2 - ) therein even in the atmosphere or in a solvent, and a method for synthesizing the material and a use of the material. A mayenite-type compound into which imide anions are incorporated at a concentration of 1 × 10 18 cm -3 or more are provided. The mayenite-type compound can be produced by heating a mayenite-type compound including electrons or free oxygen ions in a cage thereof, in liquefied ammonia at 450 to 700°C and at a pressure of 30 to 100 MPa. The compound has properties such that active imide anions can be easily incorporated into the compound and the active imide anions can be easily released in the form of ammonia from the compound, and the compound has chemical stability.
