A video display (10) includes a scanner (100) operable at a first frequency (H1) and a higher second frequency (H2). A switchmode power supply (SMPS) (32) drives a transformer (T1) with three secondaries (T1S1b, T1S1a and T1S2). First and second rectifiers & filters ((CR107, CR108) and (F101, F102)) are associated with the first and second secondaries. A rectifier is coupled to the third secondary (T1S1b) and by way of a switch (K2) to the first filter (F101). Feedback from the first filter (F101) controls the SMPS (32). In a first operating mode, the scanner (100) is operated at the first frequency, the switch is open, the scanner supply (SCAN +) is a first voltage from the first filter (F101), and ancillary equipment is supplied with a third voltage by the second filter (F102). In a second operating mode, the scanner (100) is operated at the second frequency, the switch (K2) is closed, the scanner supply (SCANB +) is a second voltage, higher than the first, from the first filter (F101), and ancillary equipment is supplied with the same third voltage.

A cathode ray tube (CRT) (1) having a glass envelope (2) is disclosed. The glass envelope is formed of a rectangular faceplate panel (3) and a tubular neck (4) connected thereto by a funnel (5). An electron gun (13) is positioned in the neck for directing electron beams toward the faceplate panel. A yoke (14) is positioned in the neighborhood of the funnel-to-neck junction. The yoke has windings configured to apply a horizontal deflection yoke field and a vertical deflection yoke field to the beams. At least one magnetic field sensor (17) is located near the glass envelope for sensing an ambient magnetic field environment of the CRT. A controller receives a signal from the magnetic field sensor. Register correction coils are mounted in the vicinity of the neck and are dynamically controlled by the controller to shift the beams. Quadrupole coils (16) are applied to the neck and have adjacent poles of alternating polarity such that the resultant magnetic field being dynamically controlled by the controller based on the magnetic field sensor signal moves outer ones of the beams to correct the misconvergence caused by the register correction.

In a color CRT apparatus in which three electron beams 4, 5, 6 are not superimposed on one point on the screen 11 at a time, a time difference is applied to modulating signals 12, 13, 14 corresponding to the respective electron beams to adjust phase, thus achieving convergence of images, the screen is flat, both a horizontal magnetic deflection field and a vertical magnetic deflection field have uniform magnetic field distribution, paths of both side electron beams and a path of the center electron beam of the three electron beams 4, 5, 6 emitted from electron sources 1, 2, 3 are approximately parallel, and the time difference applied to the modulating signals is set to be approximately constant throughout the screen 11. Thus, images formed of imaging spots of the three electron beams can be superimposed on the screen with high precision to be matched without causing increased cost. Consequently, it is possible to cope sufficiently with the increased display density of image information and increased deflection angle due to the reduction in depth of the color CRT apparatus.
