    Abstract: PURPOSE:To improve the exhaust purification efficiency of a multiple-cylinder internal combustion engine which has two cylinder groups and a catalyst converter per exhaust system of respective cylinder groups. CONSTITUTION:Oxygen sensor 13A, 13B on the upstream side, catalyst converters 12A, 12B on the upstream side, and oxygen sensor 17A, 17B on the downstream side are respectively provided in exhaust pipes 14A, 14B of both A and B cylinder groups, and catalyst converters 17A, 17B on the downstream side are provided on the downstream side of the confluent part of the exhaust pipes 14A, 14B. Air-fuel ratios in respective cylinder groups are feedback-controlled based on outputs of the oxygen sensors 13A, 13B on the upstream side and outputs of the oxygen sensor 17A, 17B on the downstream side respectively. When the phases of air-fuel ratio variation in both cylinder groups come close to each other, control based on the oxygen sensor on the downstream side of one of the cylinder group is stopped, and an inlet gas air- fuel ratio of a catalyst converter 16 on the downstream side is maintained to a theoretical air-fuel ratio by changing variation cycle by only 1/2 cycle.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To enhance the driving performance, the rate of fuel consumption, and the exhaust gas characteristic by suppressing the increment of fuel for a certain period of time after becoming high load, when the degree of high load has become comparatively small, and by changing the degree of this suppression according to the position of transmission. CONSTITUTION:In control circuit 31 mounted on an air flow meter 23, throttle sensor 26, and transmission the sensing values of a lever sensor 27, revolving speed sensor 28, etc. to sense whether a shift lever is switched into the drive range is entered. The control circuit 31 sets the incremental factor to approx. 0.17 when the degree of throttle opening exceeds 70 deg. and to approx. 0.15 immediately if the shift lever is outside the D range when the degree of throttle opening is below 70 deg. and the amount of suction air is above a specified value. When the shift lever is in D range, the incremental factor is set to approx. 0.15 after passage of a certain period of time.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To stabilize the operation of a piston, by providing a check valve and an orifice at the air damper chamber of a variable choke carburetor, and by using the peripheral surface of a piston rod and a plug defining the damper chamber, to define the orifice to enhance the accuracy of machining for the orifice. CONSTITUTION:The negative pressure in a venturi portion is introduced into a chamber 40 through a hole 42 so that a piston 18 provided with a needle 32 is slid by a quantity of air or the negative pressure. A piston rod 30 secured in the piston 18 is guided by antifriction bearing assemblies 50, 52 secured in a piston housing 36, so that the piston rod performs stable sliding. A check valve 67, which connects or disconnects a chamber 70 is the piston rod 30 and an air damper chamber 56 to or from each other, is provided at the end of the piston rod. At the time of acceleration, the piston 18 tends to move leftward as to the drawing but is restrained by the closure of the check valve 67 so that the piston slowly moves leftward due to the leak through an orifice 60 accurately defined by a plug 54 and the peripheral surface of the piston rod 30.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To improve the response performance of fuel control in acceleration and deceleration by allowing an air bleed passage to communicate to an atmospheric chamber in the piston operation part of a variable venturi type carburetor. CONSTITUTION:A needle valve 4 is fixed at the lower edge of a suction piston 3 installed onto the upstream side of a throttle valve 6. The piston 3 is operated by introducing a negative pressure into a negative-pressure chamber 15 from a suction hole 18 formed at the lower edge surface of the piston 3. The atmospheric chamber 16 on the other side of the negative-pressure chamber 15 communicates to a suction passage 2 on the upstream side of the piston 3 through a passage 19. The atmospheric chamber 16 further communiates to an air bleed hole 27 through a valve 40 and a passage 43. When a valve 38 is opened according to a variety of inputs and the valve 40 is opened and the piston 3 moves leftward immediately in acceleration, a negative pressure is temporarily generated in the atmospheric chamber 16, and the air bleed supplied from the hole 27 is reduced, and dense mixed gas is supplied. In deceleration when the piston 3 immediately moves rightward, a high pressure is temporarily generated in the atmospheric chamber 16, and a large amount of air is supplied from the opening 27, and lean mixed gas is supplied.

A fuel passage 24 branched from the upstream side of the jet 21 supplies the idle low-speed fuel into the suction passage 5 between the throttle valve 6 and a piston 14 from an opened port 25b through a vertical passage 25a. Said opened port 25b is spread towards the suction passage and formed into bugle form, and since a horizontal plane does not exist, the fuel accumulation at the opened port 25b is prevented.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide atmosphere in a catalyst with a stoichiometric air-fuel ratio since a lean operation is switched to a stoichiometric operation. SOLUTION: When an output signal level of NOX ammonia sensor 29 is higher than a first reference level while an air-fuel ratio sensor 30 detects a lean air-fuel ratio in a predetermined period time after switching of the engine operation from the lean operation to the stoichiometric operation, a fuel injection amount is increased and corrected. When the output signal level of NOX ammonia sensor 29 is higher than a second reference level while the air-fuel ratio sensor detects a rich air-fuel ratio in a predetermined period, time the fuel injection amount is decreased and corrected. Thus, a fuel injection amount correcting process is performed.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent nitrogen oxides from escaping downstream from a nitrogen oxides purifying catalyst when starting an engine without removing nitrogen oxides absorbed inside the nitrogen oxides purifying catalyst when an engine operation stoppage is requested. SOLUTION: The nitrogen oxides purifying catalyst 23 absorbing the nitrogen oxides in exhaust gas when an exhaust air-fuel ratio is lean and releasing the absorbed nitrogen oxides when the exhaust air-fuel ratio becomes small is provided in an engine exhaust passage. By providing an interior of the nitrogen oxides purifying catalyst with a rich atmosphere when predetermined conditions are satisfied during engine operation, the absorbed nitrogen oxides is released from the nitrogen oxides purifying catalyst and the released nitrogen oxides is reductively purified. A slight enriching process slightly enriching the air-fuel ratio is performed when the internal combustion engine is started.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To heat up NOx absorbent, while maintaining mean air-fuel ratio of inflow exhaust at a target value. SOLUTION: First and second cylinder groups 1a and 1b are connected to a NOx absorbent 12 via a convergent exhaust pipe 11. The target values of the air-fuel ratios of exhaust of the first and second cylinder groups 1a and 1b are set on a rich side and a lean side respectively, so that the mean air-fuel ratio of exhaust flowing into the NOx absorbent 12 is barely on the rich side. In the NOx absorbent 12, HC in the exhaust of the first cylinder group 1a and oxygen in the exhaust of the second cylinder group 1b react upon each other to heat up the NOx absorbent 12 or release SOx therefrom. The fuel injection quantities of the first and second cylinder groups 1a and 1b are controlled so as to keep the mean inflow-exhaust air-fuel ratio at a targeted value, on the basis of the output signal of an air-fuel ratio sensor 30 disposed downstream of the NOx absorbent 12.
