An AM device is provided that has a short response time, a large voltage holding ratio, a large contrast ratio, a long service life and so forth. A liquid crystal composition having a nematic phase, wherein the first component contains a specific five ring compound having a large optical anisotropy and a large dielectric anisotropy, the second component contains a specific compound having a small viscosity, and the third component contains a specific four ring compound having a high maximum temperature. The liquid crystal display device contains the liquid crystal composition.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain satisfactory viewing angle characteristics from an oblique visual field in an in-plane switching liquid crystal display device which has two liquid crystal initial alignment directions orthogonal to each other.SOLUTION: In both a region I and a region II, an absorption axis 26 of an incidence-side polarizer 22 and an absorption axis 27 of an emission-side polarizer 23 are orthogonal to each other, and a liquid crystal layer 12a and an optical compensation layer comprising an in-cell retarder 10, an A plate 24, and a C plate 25, which are interposed between the polarizers, are parallel with either of the absorption axes 26 and 27 or are orthogonal to substrates 20 and 21. Therefore, transmittance is reduced to obtain satisfactory black display even when a display surface is viewed from an oblique visual field.

The polymer composition is formed to have different densities in a direction between the first substrate 10 and the second substrate 38. At least in a region overlapping with the pair of transparent electrodes 34, the polymer composition has a part 50 having the highest density, the part being located closer to the first substrate 10 than to the second substrate 38.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manufacturing method of a color liquid crystal thin film capable of manufacturing a color liquid crystal thin film of a required color, and to provide a color liquid crystal thin film and a display device.SOLUTION: The present invention discloses: a manufacturing method of a color liquid crystal thin film; a color liquid crystal thin film; and a display device. The color liquid crystal thin film is manufactured by using a blue phase liquid crystal with high polymer stabilization, the liquid crystal is rotated via an electric field to realize display of different colors, and the liquid crystal is fixed by being irradiated with ultraviolet. Since the liquid crystal is rotated via the electric field, the manufacturing efficiency of the color liquid crystal thin film is improved, and in addition, it is also easy to control colors shown by the color liquid crystal thin film. The color liquid crystal thin film relatively rich in color types can be manufactured by applying electric fields of different strength.

SOLUTION: This liquid crystal display device includes: a first substrate; a second substrate facing the first substrate; a pair of field-generating electrodes formed on at least either the first substrate or the second substrate; and a liquid crystal layer which is interposed between the first and the second substrate and which includes a liquid crystal and an orientation auxiliary material.
