    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the durability of a sponge roll used in a fixing device as well as to smoothly rotate the sponge roll. SOLUTION: The loss coefficient (tanδ) of an elastic layer 11a of the sponge roll 11 used in a fixing device 10 is confined so that it becomes ≤0.15 when an oscillation having a frequency of 10 Hz is applied in a shear direction at 23°C. As a result, even in rotation under pressure, shear deformation of the elastic layer 11a is regulated and distortion occurs hardly, so that it is made easy to smoothly rotate the sponge roll 11 without requiring large power.
