PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel process for radical polymerization of alkenes based on atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). SOLUTION: Improved processes have been developed for atom (or group) transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). In one improvement, the ATRP process includes a polymerization in the presence of a (partially) free radical-deactivating equivalent amount of a reduced or oxidized transition metal compound. In a further improvement, the ATRP process includes a polymerization in the presence of a homogeneous system or a solubilized initiating catalytic system. Also provided are end-functional, site-specific functional and telecheric homopolymers and copolymers; block, random, grafted, alternating and tapered (or "gradient") copolymers which may have certain characteristics or a certain novel structure; star, comb and "hyperbranched" polymers and copolymers; multi-functional hyperbranched, end-functional polymers; cross-linked polymers and gels; water-soluble polymers and hydrogels (such as a copolymer prepared by radical copolymerization of a water-soluble monomer and a divinyl monomer); and an ATRP process using water as a medium. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photosensitive resin composition for a display device spacer producing a display device making suppression of display unevenness caused by plastic deformation compatible with the suppression of the display unevenness caused by deterioration of adhesiveness according to an improvement in hardness or mechanical strength, affording good display quality without the display unevenness and having good yield. SOLUTION: The photosensitive resin composition for the display device spacer comprises (a) a binder polymer, (b) a photopolymerizable unsaturated compound having at least one ethylenically unsaturated group in one molecule, (c) a photopolymerization initiator producing free radicals with actinic rays and (d) a silyl group-containing organic compound having at least one hydrolyzable group-containing silyl group in one molecule.
