PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel method for producing a tungsten peroxide compound useful as a catalyst for the epoxidation of an alkene, and a method for producing an epoxy compound using the catalyst.SOLUTION: A method for producing a tungsten peroxide compound is provided which is characterized by comprising reacting (a) tungstic acid with (b) an ammonium hydroxide compound selected from (HN)(OH), (HRN)(OH), (HRR)(OH), (HRRRN)(OH) and (RRRRN)(OH). In the formulae, Rto Rmay be the same as or different from one another, independently represent a linear or branched alkyl group having 1 to 18 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl group or a benzyl group, and may contain nitrogen or oxygen.

A pretreated titanium silicalite with MFI structure (TS-1) catalyst which has been pretreated with methanol, and then optionally filtered and optionally air-dried to form a pretreated activated TS-1 catalyst. The activated TS-1 may be used in an epoxidation reaction with no additional methanol added and has equivalent activity to TS-1 used with large excesses of methanol. By removing the need for additional methanol during the reaction, the losses of epichlorohydrin from solvolysis are minimized significantly.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new method for producing oxirane, despite producing only a small amount of byproducts, without lowering reaction rate, and capable of 100% converting introduced hydrogen peroxide.SOLUTION: This method for producing oxirane by reacting an olefin with a peroxide compound in the presence of a catalyst includes introducing a peroxide compound into only a first reactor, without feeding a fresh peroxide compound into ≥1 subsequent reactors and feeding only the peroxide compound present in an intermediate obtained from the preceding reactor and not consumed in the preceding reactor into the subsequent reactors.
