SOLUTION: A circulation pipe passage 61 forming a circulation passage of a heat exchange medium is provided with a heat storage tank 65 warming and holding the heat exchange medium heated by the engine 22 and a water pump 62 of which rotational shaft is mechanically connected to a crankshaft of the engine 22 for circulating the heat exchange medium inside the circulation pipe passage 61 and driven by rotational force of the crankshaft. When start of the engine 22 is instructed, if engine water temperature from a temperature sensor 23 is below predetermined temperature, cranking of the engine 22 is continued for predetermined time to preheat the engine 22. SOLUTION: This thermal storage system controls the power supply to the pump for thermal storage to adjust a present flow rate to a target flow rate. By controlling the pump for thermal storage on the basis of the flow rate, the stable warm-up stroke can be realized by absorbing the influence due to the individual variation of the pump and a piping system, and the change of properties with time. When the warm-up is completed, a value of electric power in completion is recorded as a present learning value. The present learning value is utilized as the initial applied power in the next warm-up stroke.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a starting device for an internal combustion engine, suppressing the occurrence of great vibration in the internal combustion engine following wastefully increased pressure in a combustion chamber getting into the first compression stroke after starting the engine in a warm-up completed condition.
SOLUTION: At starting the engine in the warm-up completed condition, torque to be granted to a crankshaft 9 for cranking is lowered in a certain period from starting the engine to arriving at the top dead center of the compression stroke. Thus, the torque to be granted to the crankshaft 9 is set to be such a value that the rotation of the crankshaft 9 is stopped in the certain period to make an engine speed into zero. When the rotation of the crankshaft 9 is stopped, a time required for releasing a preset amount of gas from the combustion chamber 2 being in the first compression stroke after starting the engine is accurately kept in the period and pressure in the combustion chamber 2 is lowered. Consequently, there is no wastefully increased pressure in the combustion chamber 2 after resuming the cranking.
