    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a waveguide mode resonance (GMR) sensor assembly and a system.SOLUTION: A GMR sensor includes: a waveguide structure constituted to operate in one or more leakage modes or in the vicinity thereof; means of receiving input light from a light source to the waveguide structure, and generating one or more leakage TE resonance modes and TM resonance modes; and means of detecting change of one or more parameters in the phase, waveform and/or amplitude of each of TE resonance and TM resonance, and discriminating a first physical state from a second physical state in the waveguide structure or the external environment directly contacting with the waveguide structure.
