Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an ester of carboxyl-containing mixture polymer capable of providing a functional fluid relatively high in the level of mixture polymer with a good low-temperature characteristic, and to obtain a carboxyl-containing mixture polymer as an intermediate therefor. SOLUTION: This nitrogen-containing ester is of a carboxyl-containing mixture polymer derived from a vinyl aromatic monomer and α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid or any anhydrate or ester thereof, wherein the mixture polymer has an intrinsic viscosity of 0.05 to 0.30 and the nitrogen-containing ester has the following pendant polar groups: (A) a carboxylic acid ester group having at least 8 aliphatic carbon atoms in the alkyl site of the ester group; and (B) a carbonylamino group derived from an amino compound having a primary or secondary amino group.

SOLUTION: A composition comprises 10-90 wt.% fluorinecontaining 1-2C hydrocarbon; 5-90 wt.% ester of a carboxylic acid represented by the formula: R[OC(O)R ]n (wherein R is hydrocarbyl; R is H, 1-7C hydrocarbyl or the like; and n is 2-10) with a polyhydric hydroxy compound; and 0.1-5 wt.% alkoxylated alcohol or phenol represented by formula I (wherein R is 1-20C aliphatic, 6-24C aromatic or the like; R is H, methyl or ethyl; y is 1-3; and x is 2-50) or alkoxylated glycol represented by formula II (wherein R is 2-8C hydroxyalkyl; and R, y and x are the same as defined above).

SOLUTION: This is a method for manufacturing a polyolefin-substituted carboxylic acid acylation agent of a low chlorine content and comprises the following processes. A. A process in which a mixture contg. a polyolefin having an Mn of 300-10,000, 4 or 3 substituted end groups of ca. 90 mol.% of the polyolefin, and a halogen is formed at lower than ca. 150 deg.C and heated. B. A process in which an α,β-unsaturated compd. is added. C. A process in which the mixture is heated up to ca. 170-220 deg.C and kept at the temperature. D. A process in which the mixture is cooled to lower than ca. 220 deg.C and an equivalent amount of the halogen and the α,β-unsaturated compd. is added. E. A process in which the temperature of the mixture is raised to a certain level lower than ca. 220 deg.C, and keep it until the unreacted α,β-unsaturated compd. is reduced to less than ca. 3%.

The substd. carboxylic acid acylating agent is obtd. by the chlorine-catalyzed reaction of a polyolefin (e.g. polybutene, etc.) having a wt. average mol.wt. of 200-5,000 with an α,δ-unsatd. carboxylic anhydride (e.g. maleic anhydride, etc.). In formulas I to III, R is a hydrocarbylated olefin group; R , R , and R are each H or hydrocarbyl; R is a divalent hydrocarbylene; and n is 0 or 1.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an additive concentrate, capable of imparting excellent low-temperature characteristics and improving properties of viscosity index and useful as a viscosity improver, etc., by including a specific organic diluent and a specified ester in a specific proportion therein. SOLUTION: This additive concentrate comprises (A) 5-95wt.% organic diluent such as a naphthenic oil or a synthetic oil and (B) 95-5wt.% ester derived from a carboxy-containing interpolymer having 0.05-0.35 reduced specific viscosity. The interpolymer is derived from two or more monomers of components (i) and (ii). (i) either one of the monomers is one or more of a 2-30C aliphatic olefin and a vinyl aromatic monomer and (ii) the other of the monomers is one or more α,β-unsaturated acylating agents. The ester has 20-70mol% of 12-19C ester groups (based on the number of mol of carboxyl groups in the interpolymer) and 80-30mol% of 8-11C ester groups (based on the number of mol of the carboxyl groups in the interpolymer), derived from carboxy groups of the interpolymer and present in the polymeric structure thereof.
