Abstract: In the occupant protection device according to the present invention, a restraint body joined with a driving mechanism is located near a target area of a seated occupant while being surrounded by an interior decoration member. Upon predicting a collision of the vehicle, the driving mechanism is actuated to protrude the restraint body from an opening in the interior decoration member for restraining the movement of the target area upon collision by its side facing the occupant, and when the collision is avoided, the driving mechanism returns the protruded restraint body in the opening of the interior decoration member. The restraint body is provided in the vicinity of its outer periphery with a retaining hole, a clip to be inserted in and retained by the retaining hole, and a guide surface for guiding the clip into the retaining hole for helping the restraint body to return in the opening of the interior decoration member. By this guide mechanism including the retaining hole, the clip and the guide surface, the restraint body is able to return to the opening of the interior decoration member smoothly without deteriorating the appearance.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To quickly and surely inflate a bag by preventing the expansion of the bag from being obstructed by the upper end part of a pillar garnish of a center pillar. SOLUTION: A joint part is formed by allowing the upper end part 52A of a pillar garnish 50 to abut on the outer end part 50A of a roof head lining 50, instead of making overlapping of them, and an extension part 52B is integrally extended from the upper end part 52A to the pillar inner panel 36 side. Thus, when a pair of expansion parts 26A, 26B are unfolded in the directions in which they are separated from each other by the expansion pressure of a bag 16, the unfolding angle of the expansion part 26B is regulated by the extension part 52B, and the direction of expansion of the bag 16 is also regulated. Thus, the expansion pressure of the bag 16 acts only on the outer end part 50A, the expansion of the bag 16 is not obstructed by the upper end part 52A, and thereby the bag expands correctly and quickly, positively.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shock absorbing body for a vehicle capable of suppressing a sharp load at a last stage in a F-S curve of the shock absorbing body for the vehicle with a shock absorbing part formed in a grid-shape or the like by connecting thin thickness ribs. SOLUTION: The shock absorbing body to be attached to a rear surface of a restraint panel or the like which protrudes toward an occupant side to protect occupant knee parts forms the plurality of thin thickness ribs 44 to intersect each other on a support plate 41, and absorbs shock energy by being plastically deformed when the shock load is applied. A taper cross section 44a and an inverse taper cross section 44b are provided in erected directional cross sections of the thin thickness ribs 44 so that generation of the sharp load at the last stage in a load (F)-displacement quantity (S) is suppressed. Abstract: A structure of arranging an vehicle occupant protecting apparatus for an automotive vehicle, which can prevent a pillar garnish from scattering when an air bag installed in a front pillar portion is expanded, is provided. An air bag 16 is housed within a space formed by a front pillar main body 38 and a pillar garnish 40 in a front pillar portion 20. When the air bag 16 expands, the pillar garnish 40 is pressed by an expanding pressure of the air bag 16, so that an opening for expanding the air bag 16 is formed between the front pillar main body 38 and the pillar garnish 40, and the air bag 16 expands into a vehicle cabin through the opening. Since a non-expanding portion is formed at the air bag 16 and a hinge portion 46 is formed at the pillar garnish 40, the expanding pressure applied to the pillar garnish 40 when the air bag 16 expand is low, so that the pillar garnish 40 can be easily opened through the hinge portion 46.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a knee protective device capable of suppressing increase of weight or volume, absorbing kinetic energy of knees at the time of vehicle collision, and protecting knees. SOLUTION: The knee protective device S1 has a knee protective panel 21 drawn out to a front side of the knees K of an occupant M by a driving mechanism 30 at the time of the vehicle collision. The panel 21 has a panel main body 22, and shock absorbing material 25 positioned at a front face side of the panel main body 22, capable of being plastically deformed so as to absorb the kinetic energy. The driving mechanism 30 has a support plate 33 for supporting the shock absorbing material 25, and a driving source 31 for drawing out the support plate 33 to the front side of the knees K along with the panel 21 at the time of the vehicle collision. The shock absorbing material 25 gradually reduces a cross section in a vertical direction from a panel main body side to a support plate side by making projection area of fore-and-aft direction smaller than the panel main body 22. Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a knee protector capable of securing a protection area to be large and exactly protecting the knee of a driver. SOLUTION: The knee protector S is arranged under a steering column 6 on the front side of the knee K of the sitting driver MD, a restraining body 44 connected with a driving mechanism 52 is moved to the back side of the vehicle in operating the driving mechanism 52, and the knee K is protected by the surface on the vehicle back side of the restraining body 44. The steering column 6 has a column body 7 and a column cover 10 arranged so as to cover the periphery of the column body 7. The column cover 10 has a downside cover section 15 for covering the driver MD side on the downside of the column body 7. The lower end proximity of the downside cover section 15 is connected with the proximity of the upper end of the restraining body 44, and the downside cover section 15 can be moved to the back side of the vehicle together with the restraining body 44 in operating the driving mechanism 52. Abstract: In a knee protection system according to the present invention, a knee protection panel is driven from a standby position surrounded by an interior member to the vehicle rear side to a knee-protecting position in front of the knees of an occupant by a drive mechanism when the vehicle is crashing, whereby the knees moving forward are protected by the knee protection panel thus driven. The drive mechanism includes a holding portion for holding the knee protection panel in such a manner that the knee protection panel is moved rearward. Engagement portions are provided, respectively, at locations where the holding portion and the knee protection panel connect with each other in such a manner as to be brought into engagement with each other. These engagement portions are brought into engagement with each other when the holding portion is moved rearward due to the activation of the drive mechanism in such a manner as to prevent displacement of the knee protection panel relative to the holding portion while moving the knee protection panel rearward, as well as allowing the knee protection panel to be displaced vertically and horizontally relative to the holding portion prior to the activation of the drive mechanism. With the knee protection system according to the invention, the knee protection panel can be disposed at the standby position so as to have a visually attractive break with the surrounding interior member, without deteriorating mounting work efficiency.
