PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a controlled flow instrument which treats high viscosity liquid and a heterogeneous mixture by a semi-continuous system with high pressure and microwave assistance. SOLUTION: A controlled flow microwave instrument is disclosed for chemical synthesis using heterogeneous or highly viscous starting materials. The instrument includes a microwave source for generating electromagnetic radiation in the microwave frequencies, a microwave cavity 11 in wave communication with the source for exposing compositions placed therein to microwave radiation, a microwave permeability pressure resistant reaction vessel 13 in the cavity, source reservoirs 15, 16 for starting materials and related compositions, a pump 17 in communication with the source reservoir for pumping heterogeneous or highly viscous materials from the source reservoirs to the reaction vessel and a pressure-resistant valve 34 arranged between the pump and the reaction vessel for isolating the reaction vessel 13 from the pump and the source reservoir during application of microwave energy to the compositions in the vessel and from any resulting high pressure generated therein. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved vessel for a high-pressure micro-wave assisted chemical reaction which has the characteristics of qualities of synthetic material and also improves an existing structure. SOLUTION: A self sealing vessel assembly for the high-pressure micro-wave assisted chemical reaction consists of a polymer reaction cylinder, a circular polymer cap for the cylinder and a chalk cylinder suspending from a downward bevelling edge of the cap, wherein he polymer reaction cylinder is closed at one end, and opened at the other end as to receive the cap, an opened end of the polymer reaction cylinder consisting of a lip bevelled inward therefrom; the circular polymer cap has the downward bevelling edge which engages to the bevelled lip when the cap is put on the polymer cylinder; and the chalk cylinder has an outer diameter nearly equal to an inner diameter of the polymer cylinder so that the chalk supplies a self sealing mechanism for the polymer cylinder when the pressure from a chemical reaction increases in the polymer cylinder.
