Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for treating an oil derived from microorganisms. SOLUTION: This process for treating an oil comprises bringing the oil into contact with a polar solvent to extract at least one compound that is soluble in the solvent, and then separating the solvent containing the compound from the so treated oil. The oil is microbially derived, and extracted either from a fermentation broth or a filtrate thereof using hexane. The compound to be extracted is usually a sterol or a diglyceride. The solvent is ethanol having up to 5% water. The oil can contain a polyunsaturated fatty acid such as 18C, 20C or 22C ω-3 or ω-6 fatty acid, such as arachidonic acid. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a microbial oil more stable than conventional polyunsaturated fatty acid-containing oils isolated from microbial biomass. SOLUTION: There is provided a method for obtaining an oil containing at least one polyunsaturated fatty acid from microbial biomass, which method comprises following (a)-(d). (a) A biomass having 25-80% dry matter content is supplied, (b) the biomass is granulated to be granules, (c) the granules are dried to be dried granules, and then, (d) the oil is extracted or isolated from the dried granules.
