The CPU reduces the braking force from each wheel cylinder given to each wheel. An acceleration slip detecting means M7 is provided which outputs an acceleration slip signal when such a state that the rate of lowering of the wheel speed exceeds a predetermined value is continued while braking operation of a braking operation member M0 is not detected by a braking operation detecting means M6. When braking operation is detected and the state in which acceleration slip is detected is continued, then the braking force control means M5 is controlled by a braking force correcting means M8 so as to increase braking forces to be applied to the driving wheels.

In accordance with a gain or loss in the present total value added from the last total value stored, at least one reference value is selected from two different reference values and the reference value selected is compared to the present total value added, and the condition of a road surface is diagnosed by a means M4 according to the result of comparison.

When the recovery acceleration is less than a set value, vehicle acceleration detected by an acceleration detecting means 21 is corrected to a smaller one and estimated vehicle speed and the like are calculated according to the vehicle acceleration after correction.
