PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for the production of a finely crystalline boehmite having a low surface area and a low pore volume, which is easily miscible into plastic compounds at a high fraction of the total composition and is suitable as a flame retardant while giving excellent properties of mechanical strength. SOLUTION: A finely crystalline boehmite with an average grain size diameter D50 in the range of 50 to 400 nm and a BET-surface area in the range of 10 to 40 m 2 /g and a pore volume in the range of 0.05 to 0.5 cm 3 /g is obtained by a method of producing boehmite via autocatalytic, hydrothermal crystallization comprising: a step of providing an aqueous basic dispersion containing a hydrate source and a seed crystal of boehmite; a step of heating the dispersion in an autoclave until the hydrate source is essentially used up; and a step of drying the obtained product.
