A method of ultrasonic testing comprising conditioning a radiation wave from a laser source by efficiently converting the radiation wave's wavelength to a mid-IR wavelength for enhanced ultrasonic testing of a composite. The method includes passing the radiation wave through a first optical frequency converter where the radiation wave is converted into a signal wave and an idler wave, where the idler wave is at a mid-IR wavelength. The method further includes directing the signal and idler waves to a second optical frequency converter where the signal wave wavelength is converted to a mid-IR wavelength which combines with the idler wave to form a generation wave. The generation wave is directed at a composite surface to be tested.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automated device and method for specifying the position and the angular direction of a hole having an opening part in a surface which is at least partially closed with heat-insulation coating. SOLUTION: A scanner device 10 includes a laser spot projector 40, a laser spot sensor 42, a memory device 48, and a processor 50. In a range 24 including at least one hole 12, a laser beam 44 is projected on a surface 16 of an article, and the spot sensor 48 receives a reflection beam 46. A series of points 52 representing a scanning range 24 are stored as a point cloud 54 in the memory device 48, and processed for computation of the position and the angular direction of each hole in the range 24. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved system for identifying defects in a complex structure, by providing a light source so that defects, such as dark defects at a dark background and/or bright defects at a bright background, can be identified by capturing an image at an illuminated part in the complex structure. SOLUTION: The improved system for identifying defects in the complex structure can include a reflection surface, a dispersive element, and a plurality of and/or movable light sources and/or a camera for capturing the most accurate image for processing even at a curved region or a region having an external form, or at any region of the complex structure. As a result, by the system, an operator can rapidly identify or correct structural marks for affecting the integrity of the complex structure, or defects for causing unconformity.
