An apparatus for molding tires comprises a first turntable on which a plurality of mold carriers are mounted circumferentially spaced from each other and each removably carrying a split core configurated to define the inner surface of a tire to be molded and a plurality of outer mold parts arranged about the core and configurated in accordance with the outer surface of the tire, a second turntable adjacent the first turntable and provided on its upper surface with a plurality of first depositing stations equal in number to that of the plurality of mold carriers of the first turntable for respectively receiving the cores and a plurality of second depositing stations equal in number to said first plurality of depositing stations for respectively receiving finished tires. The two turntables are turnable stepwise and synchronously, preferably in opposite directions, about vertical axes. The apparatus includes further a first carriage for transferring cores with the finished tires thereon from the first to the second turntable and a second carriage for transferring cores separated from the finished tire from the second turntable to the mold carriers on the first turntable.

A tire is made by first fitting a pair of bead rings interconnected by reinforcement over a gas-pervious annular liner to form an annular core assembly and then inflating the core assembly by directly contacting same with a fluid to impart to the core assembly an inwardly open U-shaped section. This U-section core assembly is then spacedly enclosed in a mold which is filled around the U-section core assembly with a hardenable elastomer which is hardened so it bonds to the reinforcement, rings, and liner to form a tire. Finally the liner is deflated and the tire is demolded. The liner has a pair of opposite end edges and is inflated by sequentially clamping each of the edges against a support so as to define between the liner and the support a pressurizable chamber, displacing one of the clamped edges toward the other so as to outwardly bow the liner, and introducing a fluid, typically air, into the chamber. It is also possible to mount the rings in the mold and thereafter introduce the liner into the form for fitting it and the rings together.

A casting or injection mold for vehicle tires comprises two separable half-shells together defining an annular cavity into which a segmented core is introduced, radially inwardly converging core segments alternating with parallel-sided or radially inwardly diverging core segments to facilitate extraction of the core from the molded tire. In operation, one or more of the non-converging segments are immobilized within the mold, with the aid of mating formations on these segments and on the two half-shells, while the converging segments are urged radially inwardly by resilient or fluidic forces. In a specific embodiment these forces are supplied by a contractile annular spring with projections received in axially extending undercuts of all the segments.
