A surgical distractor for distracting a joint space to facilitate passage of a surgical tool. The distractor includes a first arm, a second arm, a coupling device, and a limit device. Each arm includes a handle portion and a flange. The coupling device pivotably couples the first and second arms such that the flanges combine to define a passage. A size of the passage increases when transitioning the distractor from a first state of expansion to a second state of expansion. The limit device is associated with the arms for selectively preventing transitioning of the distractor from the second state of expansion to the first state of expansion. In some embodiments, the flanges, and thus the passage, is laterally and/or angularly offset from the handle portions.

A method and associated system of implanting a vertebral anchor such as a pedicle screw assembly includes the steps of implanting a number of pedicle screws into a series of vertebrae; attaching a number of provisional posts to respective pedicle screws, each provisional post including a provisional saddle; bending a rod to conform to a desired alignment of the provisional saddles; removing the provisional posts from the pedicle screw heads; and connecting the bent rod to the pedicle screw heads. Advantageously, the method allows external fitting and sizing of a fixation rod before it is implanted and secured to the vertebral anchors via a minimally invasive manner.

A sizing instrument for measuring a bodily joint bounded by top and bottom surfaces, such as a disc space bounded by a top vertebra and a bottom vertebra, including a jaw assembly, a handle assembly, and an indicator portion. The jaw assembly includes an upper contact pad and a lower contact pad. The upper pad is adapted to substantially rigidly engage the top surface, and the lower pad is adapted to substantially rigidly engage the bottom surface. The handle assembly is linked to the jaw assembly and is adapted to vary a distance between the upper contact pad and the lower contact pad. In turn, the indicator portion is adapted to communicate the distance between the upper contact pad and the lower contact pad.
