A computer runs software that collects data from sampled sensors, stores the data, screens the data for outliers, analyzes the data, performs in situ testing, and generates results of the analysis and testing. The system and method verifies not only the steady state performance of instruments, but also the dynamic performance of instruments and the transient behavior of the processes. In one embodiment, the system performs testing of the wiring system connecting the end devices located at the process. In another embodiment, the system also performs analysis of the amplitude probability density and a power spectral density determined from the sensor, or end device, data. In still another embodiment, the system performs a time domain reflectometry (TDR) analysis for a wiring system connecting an end device.

A high resolution digital rod position indication (high resolution DRPI) system having improved resolution. The high resolution DRPI system monitors the rod control cluster and provides an indication of the rod position with precision to a single step. In addition, the high resolution DRPI system is capable of producing a rod position output compatible with existing rod control systems. The improved resolution of the high resolution DRPI system allows the actual position of the control rods to be continuously monitored and eliminates the need for or reduces the frequency of offline re-initialization of the step counters.

Methods and apparatus for on-line detection and measurement of degradation or undesirable changes in the time constants of sensors used in monitoring a system are disclosed. Methods and apparatus of this invention are particularly suitable for use in complex and high-risk industrial processes or other operations where it is undesirable and expensive or dangerous to allow certain parameters of the operation to change above or beyond a predetermined amount. This invention includes a detector for determining when a signal from a sensor crosses a preselected signal level such as for example a zero level. The output of the detector or zero crossing detector is provided to a counter or other means which determines the rate of the zero crossing by counting the number of crossings per a specific time period provided by a timer. The determined rate of the zero crossing is then compared to a preselected acceptable rate to determine whether or not the sensor time constant has increased beyond the preselected allowable value. If the detected crossing rate is less than the acceptable value, (corresponding to a time constant above its acceptable value) an alarm will be sounded to alert the operator of the system of the degraded sensor response time.

The D&R RTD is utilized in obtaining temperature readings in environments, such as fluids and gasses, by measuring electrical characteristics of the D&R RTD that are influenced by the temperature.
