In order to extract fiber flocks from fiber bales conveyed on a conveyor belt by very small steps in a predetermined direction of travel, an extraction member is moved over the fiber bales in a direction substantially perpendicular to the predetermined direction of travel of the fiber bales. For this purpose, the extraction member comprises a spiked opening roller driven by a motor. This spiked opening roller conveys, by rotary motion thereof, fiber flocks from the surface of the fiber bales into a fiber-flock conveying channel, in which the fiber flocks are drawn off by a fan and delivered to a conveyor channel. In this conveyor channel, which is likewise a suction fiber-flock conveying channel, the fiber flocks are fed via a connecting line or conduit to a fiber-flock processing location. For moving the extraction member over the fiber bales, the extraction member is provided with wheel shafts and wheels having a profiled tread for guidance along tube-shaped tracks. The wheel shafts are driven by a motor and an associated gearing. A control unit synchronizes the step-by-step forward travel of the fiber bales in the aforesaid predetermined direction of travel with the travel of the extraction member over the fiber bales.

The dosing method and apparatus meters predeterminate quantities of fiber flocks per unit of time by means of two feed devices arranged at the lower end of a flock chute and which form therebetween a conveying gap and an opening roll is preferably arranged beneath the feed devices. The feed devices selectively comprise either:(a) a rotatable feed roll and an oppositely situated slide; or(b) a rotatable feed roll and an oppositely situated driven or freely revolving belt; or(c) two oppositely situated revolving belts, wherein at least one of the revolving belts is driven and the other either revolves or is likewise driven; or(d) a driven revolving belt and a oppositely situated slide; or(e) a rotatable feed roll and an oppositely situated freely rotatable further feed roll; or(f) a rotatable feed roll and an oppositely situated feed trough; orwherein, for all of the indicated possible embodiments (a) to (f) the conveying gap converges to a minimum width and at least one of the feed devices is pre-biased in the direction of the other feed device and is movable away from the other feed device by the force of the fiber flocks such that the spacing between both of the feed devices is changed in the sense that there is altered the minimum width x of the conveying gap, there is selectively determined the minimum width of the conveying gap or a value proportional thereto, and the surface velocity u of the driven feed device or feed devices is regulated such that at least the average value of the product x.multidot.u of this minimum width x and the surface velocity u remains essentially constant.

The throttle valve cooperates with a stop in a lowered position to form a gap to allow a minimal air flow therethrough. In addition, a weight is provided on an arm attached to the throttle valve for pivoting therewith. The weight is disposed to counterbalance a substantial portion of the weight of the flap valve in the raised position of the valve so that the air flow maintains the valve in the open condition.
