A combing head comprises carrying and drive rollers for the lap roll, a cylinder, a detaching roller pair and nippers reciprocable between a drawn-back position and an advanced position. When the trailing end of the lap material runs off the winding tube, the combing machine is stopped at a time after the detaching roller pair have detached a fringe from the lap in the nippers and after the fringe has been separated from the lap. The lap trailing end and the empty winding tube are then removed and a new lap roll is placed on the carrying and drive rollers. Lap material is unwound from the new lap roll until the start of the lap has passed beyond the nip line of the nippers. The combing machine then restarts. The method can, if required, be performed substantially or completely automatically and calls for only a short machine down time.

A fiber infeed device supplies fiber material to a textile machine, such as a card, and comprises a driven rotatable feed roll and feed plate. This feed roll is, however, spatially fixed, whereas the feed plate is pivotable but physically immobile during detection of the thickness and thickness variations of the infed fiber material. The feed plate can be pivoted into an operating position against a stop during throughpass of the fiber material. A substantially invariable size nipping zone is thus formed between the driven rotatable feed roll and the stationary feed plate in which a property of the throughpassing fiber material representative of its instantaneous thickness and thus variations thereof can be detected. By positionally fixing the feed plate, for instance, different forces are applied thereto in the nipping zone where the fiber material is compacted. The arising variable forces enable ascertaining thickness variations of the infed fiber material. A further aspect contemplates deriving from the variable forces control signals delivered to a control device for comparison with a predeterminate reference value signal to produce output signals for controlling the rotational speed of the feed roll and thus compensating thickness variations of the infed fiber material.

The present invention concerns a crush roll arrangement for a card web with two co-operating working rolls 6 and 10 as used, e.g. for crushing of seed and shell particles contained in a thin card web. At least one of the two rolls 6 and 10 is designed as a hollow member, the cylindrical sleeve 19 of which is pressurized inside and thus deforming in radial direction. By this deformation, which is counteracted by a second roll, the crushing pressure is generated between the working rolls 6 and 10. The sleeve 19 can, among other solutions, be of varying thickness along the longitudinal direction of the roll in such a manner that its radial deformation can be adapted in longitudinal direction along the working rolls 6 and 10.
