    摘要: This application discloses a can end having a scored tear-out panel and an integral rivet securing a pull tab to said panel, wherein the tear-out panel may provide for removal of substantially the full end panel. In order to prevent failure of the rivet during the initial opening process while at the same time not increasing the effort required to open the tear-out panel, beads are provided, one on each side of the rivet, in an outwardly facing Vee configuration. Each Vee may be composed of two separate beads or the Vee may be a continuous bead. The application gives the necessary parameters to achieve the desired results.

    摘要: This application discloses a novel process in the manufacture of two-piece metal cans and the like wherein a predrawn cup is produced at the mill rather than by the can manufacturer. The predrawn cup is flanged and tapered. The predrawn cups are stacked in nested relation and a plurality of stacks are packaged at the mill for shipment to the can manufacturer. The can manufacturer then need only redraw and wall-iron the cups and trim, flange, wash and decorate them in order to complete the manufacture of the can. By this procedure scrap loss to the can manufacturer is avoided, making it also easier for a manufacturer to enter the can manufacturing business with less capital investment.

    摘要: The disclosure relates to a machine for arranging cans, of the type wherein cans or similar articles are fed by a conventional belt conveyor into a tunnel-like structure which is maintained at sub-atmospheric pressure, and through which passes a flight of a second conveyor having pocket partitions presenting pockets therebetween and the partitions extending partly across the tunnel. At the entrance of the tunnel the width is slightly greater than the width of the partition plus the width of the cans. As a pocket partition of the second conveyor and a can arrive at the tunnel entrance, the movement of the can with respect to the conventional conveyor is accelerated so that the can tends to align itself with a pocket between the partitions of the second conveyor. The wall of the tunnel opposite the second conveyor flight constitutes a cam surface which moves the can into a pocket on the second conveyor. This disclosure provides means to prevent damage to cans being fed, which results from a can, not properly aligned with a pocket, being forced by said cam surface against a pocket partition and thus being dented.

    摘要: A can body making machine wherein a previously formed cup is wall-ironed and domed and then trimmed. The wall-ironing punch is actuated by an electric motor which drives a barrel cam. The primary ram, carrying the ironing punch is moved by a follower cooperating with a first track in the barrel cam. The secondary ram carrying a stripper punch is actuated by a follower cooperating with a second track in the barrel cam. The stripper punch telescopes within the ironing punch. The cam tracks are configured for a dwell of both punches at their fully retracted position to permit loading, and then to provide a constant speed movement of the two punches as a unit to engage a preformed cup and force it through wall-ironing tool pack and into a doming die. Upon completion of the doming operation the first track serves to quickly retract the ironing punch, while the second track holds the stripper punch stationary, to strip the formed can from the ironing punch, and thereafter returns the stripper punch quickly to its starting position. An indexing pocket conveyor transports the formed cans individually to a trimmer. A gravity chute feeds the preformed cups to the wall-ironing punch, and means are provided to re-round the cups for entry thereinto of the ironing punch.

    摘要: The application discloses an apparatus in which newly manufactured empty cans are prepared for filling with foodstuffs or beverages. The cans are sequentially washed, rinsed, treated, again rinsed, and finally dried, and if desired, subsequently coated and cured. The cans are individually transported through the apparatus by means of carriers which move them in a spiral path, while they are loosely retained in said carriers. A series of spray nozzles discharge against the cylindrical surfaces of the can, and the carriers are arranged to eliminate buff bodies and vortices at the back surfaces of the can. Uniform action of the sprayed material on the can bodies is further enhanced by providing negative pressure at the discharge from the carriers. Another series of spray nozzles discharge upwardly into the interior of the can body to treat the inner surfaces thereof, and to slightly lift the can bodies so they are free to rotate by virtue of contact with a rail member while being advanced at right angles to their axes.
