Alternatively, in the production of the can, the impact-extrusion-forming process may be used to produce a short cup of the proper diameter with a heavy wall thickness and the tab, the cup then being pushed through drawing dies to reduce the wall thickness and increase the length of the cup to a proper length for trimming and flanging operations.

    摘要: A can body making machine wherein a previously formed cup is wall-ironed and domed and then trimmed. The wall-ironing punch is actuated by an electric motor which drives a barrel cam. The primary ram, carrying the ironing punch is moved by a follower cooperating with a first track in the barrel cam. The secondary ram carrying a stripper punch is actuated by a follower cooperating with a second track in the barrel cam. The stripper punch telescopes within the ironing punch. The cam tracks are configured for a dwell of both punches at their fully retracted position to permit loading, and then to provide a constant speed movement of the two punches as a unit to engage a preformed cup and force it through wall-ironing tool pack and into a doming die. Upon completion of the doming operation the first track serves to quickly retract the ironing punch, while the second track holds the stripper punch stationary, to strip the formed can from the ironing punch, and thereafter returns the stripper punch quickly to its starting position. An indexing pocket conveyor transports the formed cans individually to a trimmer. A gravity chute feeds the preformed cups to the wall-ironing punch, and means are provided to re-round the cups for entry thereinto of the ironing punch.

    摘要: A conventional rotary domer, or base-forming machine, having a spider for carrying a number of female dies and a number of articles to be formed by said female dies, said spider being secured to a shaft, and a male die-carrying spider also secured to said shaft and having one die for each female die being carried by said first-named spider, and having means for reciprocating the respective male dies during a partial revolution of the shaft, is provided with a bushing telescopingly embracing each male die, and separate means for reciprocating said bushings. The separate means is arranged to advance each bushing before the respective male die advances, to reround the article to be formed and to align it properly with the respective male and female dies. The several bushings may be retracted after the respective male dies have entered the respective articles and before the respective males have completed their advance, or they may be retracted concurrently with the respective male dies, or they may be retracted after the respective male dies have been retracted, and thus serve as strippers for stripping the articles from the respective male dies.

    摘要: In an easy-open can, a structure is provided which eliminates the conventional tab-holding rivet. The can end proper is provided with at least one pair of integral raised abutments having mutually opposed parallel vertical walls normally to the axis of the tab, and the tab is provided with at least one curled portion normal to its axis and of a diameter to enter between said parallel vertical walls, which walls are then crimped over said curled portion to hold the tab to the can end. A reinforcing wire may be inserted in said curled portion to give it additional strength. The curled portion when firmly crimped into said abutments serves as a fulcrum for the tab when the latter is raised to perforate the can end and to tear open a panel which is defined by a scoreline. The invention applied equally to can ends provided with beverage type openings whether the tab be captive or not, and to cans wherein substantially the entire end panel is removed, and can be applied to a previously fabricated can end.

The belt 14 is driven intermittently under a hopper 32 containing a stack of the tops by a drive 19, orientation of the belt 14 with respect to the drum 12 being maintained by sprocket discs 25, Fig. 4 (not shown), co-operating with sprocket holes 30, Fig. 5 (not shown), along the edges of the belt 14. The belt 14 may be any suitable substantially non-stretchable material. Only one sprocket disc 25 and one set of sprocket holes may be provided. The holes 31 may be replaced by other work-holders to suit other workpieces.
