    Abstract: SHAPED ARTICLES SUCH AS FILAMENTS ARE PRODUCED FROM POLYCAPROAMIDE IN A CONTINUOUS PROCESS WHICH COMPRISES EXTRUDING A NASCENT MOLTEN POLYMER HAVING LESS THAN ABOUT 12 MEQ./KG. OF MINOR SPECIES OF UNREACTED END GROUPS AND LESS THAN 2.5 PERCENT BY WEIGHT WATER EXTRACTABLES FOLLOWING POLYMERIZATION. THE MOLTEN POLYMER IS KEPT SUBSTANTIALLY ANHYDROUS AND MAINTAINED UNDER SHEAR IN A FILLED SYSTEM UNTIL EXTRUDED TO FORM A PRODUCT. THIS PROCESS EFFECTIVELY INHIBITS THE REGENERATION OF MONOMER IN THE POLYMER AND STABILIZES THE MOLECULAR WEIGHT THEREOF AFTER POLYMERIZATION THEREBY IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF THE PRODUCTS PRODUCED FROM THE POLYMER MELT PREPARED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE PRESENT INVENTION.

WHEN LESS THAN ABOUT 45% OF THE EPSILON-CAPROLACTAM IS REACTED AND THE MIXTURE HAS GONE THROUGH A MAXIMUM END GROUP CONCENTRATION, THE RATE OF POLYMERIZATION CAN BE INCREASED AND EVAPORATIVE CONDITIONS CAN BE APPLIED TO REMOVE WATER AND EXCESS MONOMER WITHOUT F URTHER INCREASING THE CONCENTRATION OF CYCLIC OLIGOMERS.
