    Abstract: This invention relates to spontaneously opacifiable glasses containing fluorine and having as the principal opacifying phase an immiscible, or insoluble, fluorine containing glass; the opal is an alkali aluminosilicate glass with additions of divalent oxides, fluorine, and boric-oxide. These glasses are opacified by cooling the glass body from the melt to a temperature below about the opal liquidus thereof at a rate greater than about 2* C./minute so as to homogeneously separate an insoluble glassy opacifying phase.

    Abstract: This invention relates to improved barium flint glasses particularly designed for production of segments or buttons for multifocal ophthalmic lenses. The glasses have refractive indices in the range of 1.64 to 1.71, corresponding dispersive indices (nu values) such that the nu value (V) is greater than 260 minus 133 times the refractive index, relatively low liquidus temperatures, and good chemical durability. The glasses consist essentially, in percent by weight, of 33-43% SiO2, 0-4% B2O3, 3343% SiO2 + B2O3, 4-9% Na2O, 0-4% K2O, 5-10% Na2O + K2O, 17-24% BaO, 0-3% CaO, 0-5% La2O3, 22-26% BaO + CaO + La2O3, 13-28% PbO, 2-5% ZnO, 15-30% PbO + ZnO, 2-4% TiO2, 3-6% ZrO2, and 6-9% TiO2 + ZrO2.
