Abstract: Methods for reforming a glass-based sheet by gravity sagging comprising placing a glass-based sheet over a mold, placing a glass-based patch on a top surface of the glass-based sheet, and heating the glass-based sheet and the glass-based patch to a reforming temperature such that both the glass-based sheet and the glass-based patch deform into the mold cavity under gravitational force. The glass-based patch can be sized and positioned on the top surface of the glass-based sheet to prevent the formation of a wrinkle during the reforming method. The glass-based sheet can be reformed using an apparatus comprising the mold and one or more of the glass-based patches fixed relative to a top surface of the mold.

Abstract: A method of forming a glass ribbon includes flowing a molten glass into a caster having a width (Wcast) and a thickness (Tcast) to form a cast glass, cooling the cast glass in the caster to a viscosity of 108 Poise or more, conveying the cast glass from the caster, volumetrically heating the cast glass to an average viscosity of 106 Poise or less using a gyrotron microwave heating device, and drawing the cast glass into a glass ribbon having a width (Wgr) that is less than or equal to the width (Wcast) of the caster and a thickness (Tgr) that is less than the thickness (Tcast) of the caster.

Abstract: An edge-press molding element is part of a glass-bending tooling that includes a contoured-ring, gasket form factor. The edge-press molding element operates by self-weight bending a glass pane under a thermal load. The glass pane bends under molding conditions where a temperature differential of as low as 30° C. up to 100° C. is achieved between an edge of the glass pane and the center.

Abstract: A sag-assist articulated tooling apparatus is described for complex, non-developable thin glass bending. The tooling apparatus employs a double-axis articulation design which introduces controllable external force in addition to glass gravity itself. The tooling apparatus described an articulated section along the primary bending direction and an articulated section along the cross bending direction. Each articulated section may include a hinge tower, counterweight, swing stopper, and counterweight stopper.

Abstract: Complexly-curved glass articles and methods of forming the same are described herein. The glass articles described herein may be reformed via application of vacuum pressure thereto. The glass articles may comprise a first glass layer comprising a first non-developable curved shape defined by a first curved surface and a second curved surface. At least one of the first curved surface and the second curved surface comprises a surface area of 60.000 mm2 or more. A thickness of the glass articles may comprise a uniformity of +/−75 microns per 1000 mm2 of surface area. The non-developable curved shape may comprise a maximum compressive strain shape parameter, as measured between an imaginary central surface disposed between the first curved surface and the second curved surface and an imaginary surface, of greater than or equal to 3.0%.

Abstract: A method of forming a glass ribbon including flowing molten glass into a sheet forming device to form formed glass. The formed glass having a first portion and a second portion, the first portion having a larger thickness than the second portion. The method further includes volumetrically heating the formed glass using an electromagnetic heating device, so that the first portion has a lower average viscosity than the second portion, and drawing the formed glass into a glass ribbon, such that the first portion is drawn with a higher rate of elongation than the second portion.
