Abstract: Complexly-curved glass articles and methods of forming the same are described herein. The glass articles described herein may be reformed via application of vacuum pressure thereto. The glass articles may comprise a first glass layer comprising a first non-developable curved shape defined by a first curved surface and a second curved surface. At least one of the first curved surface and the second curved surface comprises a surface area of 60.000 mm2 or more. A thickness of the glass articles may comprise a uniformity of +/−75 microns per 1000 mm2 of surface area. The non-developable curved shape may comprise a maximum compressive strain shape parameter, as measured between an imaginary central surface disposed between the first curved surface and the second curved surface and an imaginary surface, of greater than or equal to 3.0%.

Abstract: Disclosed are embodiments of a glass article of a vehicle interior system. The glass article includes a frame having a curved support surface. The frame is configured to hold at least one magnet. The glass article also includes a glass sheet having a first major surface and a second major surface opposite to the first major surface. The glass sheet is arranged with the second major surface facing toward the curved support surface. The glass article further includes a metal strip disposed on the glass sheet. The metal strip and the at least one magnet create a magnetic connection sufficient to hold the glass sheet in conformity with the curved support surface.

Abstract: A shaped article can include a substrate formed from a glass material, a glass ceramic material, or a combination thereof and a cavity formed in the substrate. A sidewall of the cavity can have a random textured surface with a surface roughness of less than or equal to 300 nm. A method of machining a protrusion in a graphite block can include translating a cutting tool in a first longitudinal direction toward the graphite block to engage the graphite block with the cutting tool while rotating the cutting tool about a rotational axis without translating the cutting tool in a lateral direction, then translating the cutting tool in a second longitudinal direction away from the graphite block without translating the cutting tool in the lateral direction to disengage the cutting tool from the graphite block. A shaped article can be formed by pressing a preform with a monolithic graphite mold.

Abstract: Methods for reforming a glass-based sheet by gravity sagging comprising placing a glass-based sheet over a mold, placing a glass-based patch on a top surface of the glass-based sheet, and heating the glass-based sheet and the glass-based patch to a reforming temperature such that both the glass-based sheet and the glass-based patch deform into the mold cavity under gravitational force. The glass-based patch can be sized and positioned on the top surface of the glass-based sheet to prevent the formation of a wrinkle during the reforming method. The glass-based sheet can be reformed using an apparatus comprising the mold and one or more of the glass-based patches fixed relative to a top surface of the mold.
