    Abstract: [Object] An object of the present invention is to provide a liquid crystal composition containing a polymerizable compound for use in the manufacture of a PSA or PSVA liquid crystal display device. The polymerizable compound has a sufficiently high polymerization rate. The PSA or PSVA liquid crystal display device has few or no display defects due to a change in pretilt angle, has an adequate pretilt angle, and has high responsiveness. The present invention also provides a liquid crystal display device having the liquid crystal composition.[Solution] The object is achieved by using a liquid crystal composition containing one or two or more polymerizable compounds represented by the general formula (I).

    Abstract: The polymerizable composition and the liquid crystal composition containing the polymerizable compound of the present invention have favorable storage stability as evaluated on the basis of the occurrence of precipitation, separation, or the like of crystals during storage. The present invention relates to a polymerizable compound, a liquid crystal composition which contains the compound, and further a liquid crystal display element which contains an optically anisotropic material which is a cured product of the liquid crystal composition, or a cured product which controls alignment of liquid crystal molecules. That is, the present invention relates to a polymerizable compound, and a liquid crystal composition containing the polymerizable compound which contains the polymerizable compound and a liquid crystal compound. The polymerizable compound is a compound represented by General Formula (I), and is useful for an optically anisotropic material, a retardation layer, an alignment film, or a polarizing layer.

The compound has large refractive index anisotropy Δn, sufficiently high Tn-i, and high compatibility with a liquid crystal composition, and shows large dielectric anisotropy in a high frequency region, and is thus useful for a material of an element of a device such as a high-frequency phase shifter, a phased array antenna, an image recognition device, a distance measuring device, a liquid crystal display device, a liquid crystal lens, a birefringent lens for stereoscopic image display.
