Abstract: A small solids handling pump of the type for use in pumping mixed liquor or raw sewage, comprising: an elongated vertically extending hollow standard; a volute housing affixed to the lower portion of the standard having an inlet opening through a bottom portion thereof; motor means positioned above the upper end of the standard; an impeller positioned within the volute housing immediately above the inlet opening; and a shaft extending through the standard interconnecting the impeller to the motor means such that rotation of the impeller results in a vortex immediately below the inlet opening so as to centrifugally exclude large solids from entering the volute housing through the inlet opening. The diameter of the inlet opening is in the range of .4 to .7 times the diameter of the impeller.

Abstract: A pressure switch which has no flat surfaces or crevices where solids may settle and accumulate to plug the switch. The switch includes a first vertical connecting nipple in fluid communication at its lower end with the liquid line and at its upper end with a full opening valve means. The valve means is preferably of the ball type having a passageway therethrough defined by vertical side walls. A second vertical connecting nipple is in fluid communication at its lower end with the outlet side of the valve means and at its upper end with a housing. The housing has an opening formed therein defined by vertical side walls. A diaphragm means is positioned within the housing in closing relationship to the opening so as to deflect under varying degrees of the pressure of the liquid within the opening. A switch means is positioned above the housing which is responsive to the deflection of the diaphragm means, the interior diameter of the first and second nipples, the passageway in the ball valve, and the opening in the housing are all in vertical alignment with one another and of substantially the same diameter so as to eliminate flat surfaces where solids may settle and collect. An alternative embodiment is disclosed in which the portion of the housing below the diaphragm has side walls which converge towards the second connecting nipple at an angle greater than 60* .

Abstract: An improved apparatus for the cleaning of filter beds of a filtration apparatus which comprises a plurality of filter units, each of the units having an upper influent zone, a filter bed, and a lower filtrate zone, and including means for pumping liquid from all of the filtrate zones at a given pumping rate. In accordance with the invention, during the service cycle, liquid is pumped by the pump means from the filtrate zones to service, so that it passes through the filter bed in a downflow direction. When one of the filter units requires backwashing, the pump means is employed to pump liquid simultaneously from the filtrate zones of a majority of the filter units, so that the backwash rate is greater than the normal downflow rate through the filter unit. As an alternative to backwashing a minority of the filter unit with liquid from the majority of the units, or in addition thereto, the increased backwashing rate can be provided by increasing the pumping rate beyond the given rate during the backwashing by using booster pump means.

Abstract: A mechanical aerator for the aeration of a liquid, having an impeller positioned so as to contact the surface of the liquid, the impeller comprising: a shaft rotatable about a substantially vertical axis; and a plurality of backward curved vanes extending outwardly from the shaft, the vanes cuved such that as the impeller rotates about a substantially vertical axis a series of thin film waves emanate spirally outward and upward from the vanes, such that each particle of liquid contained therein moves radially outward from the axis of rotation. The vanes have a portion of increased depth at the area adjacent the shaft so as to gouge a hole of increased depth in the liquid and thereby facilitate rotation of the impeller. The vanes are curved such that as the impeller rotates the liquid is conveyed outward to an area of higher angular velocity.

Abstract: A filter strainer assembly for use in filtering apparatus having retaining lug means integral with a central portion thereof for holding the strainer assembly securely to a filter bed supporting plate. The strainer assembly includes a vertical center section, passing through the plate, having a passageway through a side portion thereof positioned above the plate and retaining lug means positioned below the plate.
