    Abstract: A method for noise cancellation includes monitoring a system for a current operating point, monitoring the system for a predetermined disturbance, and in response to the predetermined disturbance, determining the disturbance to be in one of a transient or steady state response period. A set of data is selected corresponding to the current operating point of the system, the disturbance, and the response period from a database containing predetermined noise cancellation waveform data. A noise cancelling waveform is output to audio transducers based upon the selected set of data.

    Abstract: Road noise masking for a vehicle includes determining, by a computer processor, an expected interior sound associated with the vehicle. The expected interior sound is defined by a design of the vehicle in conjunction with road conditions encountered by the vehicle. The road noise masking also includes monitoring, via the computer processor, information sources of the vehicle during a driving event. Upon determining a current road surface from the monitoring, the road noise masking includes calculating a masking noise shape commensurate with the expected interior sound, and transmitting instructions including the masking noise shape to an audio system in the vehicle. The audio system produces masking noise from a tuner of the audio system that approximates the masking noise shape.

    Abstract: A vehicle and an associated method for augmenting audible sound generated in a passenger compartment by operation of first and second torque machines are described. The passenger compartment includes an audio speaker that is operably controlled by a controller that is also is in communication with the first and second torque machines. The controller includes an instruction set that is executable to determine first parameters associated with audible sound generated by operation of the first torque machine and determine second parameters associated with audible sound generated by operation of the second torque machine. A desired audible sound in the passenger compartment is determined. The audio speaker is controlled to generate a correction tone based upon the first parameters, the second parameters and the desired audible sound in the passenger compartment.

    Abstract: A system that determines a road surface profile based upon filter coefficient data from noise cancellation systems is disclosed. The system includes a filter coefficient monitoring module that is configured to receive a first set of filter coefficient data from an noise cancellation module. The system also includes a road surface profile module that is configured to receive an input representing a road surface type and generate a road surface profile based upon the road surface type and the first set of filter coefficient data and to store the road surface profile including a correspondence between the road surface type and the first set of filter coefficient data.
