    摘要: A rotary cylinder for use in a calender has a roller with a hollow cylindrical sleeve and two trunnions secured to the end portions of the sleeve. The roller contains a coaxial displacing component which defines with the sleeve an annular clearance for the flow of a cooling or heating fluid, such fluid being admitted through one of the trunnions and being evacuated through the one or the other trunnion. One or more prestressed elastic cushions are interposed between the displacing component and the roller to compensate for and to counteract eventual radial and or axial movements of a portion of or the entire displacing component as a result or unequal heating or cooling of the roller and displacing component. A single cushion may constitute a hollow conical frustum or a hollow cylinder. If the roller contains several cushions, such cushions may constitute discrete disks or ribs which are integral with the displacing component and contact the internal surface of the sleeve.

    摘要: A rotary pressure applying roll which defines with a parallel complementary roll a nip for a running web of paper, textile or other flexible sheet material in a calender or the like has a cylindrical shell surrounding a stationary carrier in the form of a rigid shaft. A bearing element is installed between the shell and the carrier and several hydraulic pressure generating devices are mounted between the carrier and the bearing element to urge the latter against the internal surface of the shell. The pressure generating devices are spaced apart from each other, as considered in the circumferential direction of the shell, and the cylinder chamber of each such device can receive pressurized hydraulic fluid at a different pressure. The axis of a main pressure generating device is normally located in the common plane of the axes of the shell and of the complementary roll. The other device or devices are installed at the one and/or the other side of such plane and can be operated to counteract forces acting substantially tangentially of the shell. The carrier and the bearing element have cooperating spherical, flat and/or cylindrical guide faces which enable the bearing element to pivot about an axis that is parallel to the axis of the shell.

    摘要: A roll which can be used in a calender to bear upon a web of textile material, paper or the like while the web travels between the peripheral surface of a floating shell of the roll and a counterroll. The shell surrounds a non-rotatable shaft which carries several rows of discrete electromagnets extending in parallelism with the axis of the shaft and along an arc of at least 200 degrees, as considered in the circumferential direction of the shaft. The electromagnets can be energized to a different extent so as to subject the magnetizable material of the shell to forces of different magnitude and to thus counteract the tendency of the shell to undergo deformation in response to the action of forces which act radially of the shell or which tend to impart to the shell vibratory movements. Additional electromagnets can be provided to cooperate with a radially inwardly extending flange at one end of the shell to hold the latter against excessive movements from an optimum axial position.

    摘要: A roll for use in a calender or a like machine has a carrier which is surrounded by a flexible cylindrical shell. One or more hydrostatic displacing units are installed between the carrier and the shell to deform, when necessary, one or more selected portions of the shell. Each displacing unit has a bearing element with an external surface which is closely adjacent the internal surface of the shell and has one or more pockets for reception of a heated pressurized hydraulic fluid. Each bearing element has a second surface which faces away from the external surface, and the respective displacing unit further comprises one or more plenum chambers adjacent the second surface of the bearing element. The pocket or pockets of the bearing element receive heated fluid from a first source, and the plenum chamber or chambers of the bearing element receive compressed oil or another hydraulic fluid from a second source which can include one or more parts of the first source or vice versa. Each plenum chamber can discharge a stream of oil by way of a flow restrictor to thus prevent stagnation and/or overheating of compressed oil therein. The thus discharged oil can be returned to the source of compressed oil.

The rings can be arrested in selected positions with reference to the carrier by pairs of hydraulic cylinder and piston units which are connected with the outlets of pumps or with the outlet of a single pump by conduits containing shutoff valves. Refilling devices are provided to compensate for leakage of fluid from the chambers. The shell is deformable by rows of hydrostatic supporting elements which react against the carrier and bear against the internal surface of the shell.

    摘要: A pressure roll for use in calenders has a stationary carrier for a shell which is rotatable and movable radially of the carrier. The end portions of the shell surround antifriction bearings which, in turn, surround sleeves capable of moving radially of stubs constituting the end portions of the carrier. The sleeves are pivotally connected to the carrier for oscillatory movement about an axis which is parallel to the axis of the carrier and is angularly offset from one or more hydrostatic or otherwise configurated supporting devices operating between the carrier and the shell to change the radial position of the shell and/or to change the shape of one or more selected portions of the shell. Pivotal mounting of the sleeves on the carrier reduces friction and facilitates accurate adjustment of the radial position of the shell with reference to the carrier.

    摘要: A magnetic audio or video tape is smoothed and/or otherwise treated by causing it to pass through one or more calenders wherein a large-diameter primary calender roll is heated from within and the major part of its peripheral surface is surrounded by the running tape. The primary roll rotates about a fixed axis and is surrounded by a cluster of two or more smaller-diameter secondary calender rolls each of which has a viscoelastic peripheral layer and each of which can be individually biased against the adjacent portion of the running tape with a selected force. The magnetic film on the tape is out of contact with the secondary rolls as well as with the guide rollers which cause the tape to advance toward the peripheral surface of the primary roll and thereupon toward a takeup reel.

    摘要: The roll assembly of a calender has at least one roll with a deformable shell which surrounds a rigid carrier and whose end portions surround discrete antifriction bearings. The intermediate portion of the shell surrounds one or more rows of hydrostatic supporting elements which can be acted upon by adjustable fluid-operated motors to change the shape of the intermediate portion in a plane including the axes of the one roll and the neighboring roll as well as at right angles to such plane. Stresses which are applied to the bearings for the end portions of the shell are monitored by several sensors which transmit signals to a control system to regulate the deformation of the shell in such a way that the stresses upon the bearings are minimized or reduced to zero. This enables the intermediate portion of the shell to undergo deformation which is best suited for optimum treatment of the material passing through the nip of the one roll and the neighboring roll.

    摘要: A calender wherein the bearings for the end portions of the uppermost roll carry pressure transducers in the form of inflatable plenum chambers or hydraulic cylinder and piston units operable to bear against the lower end faces of vertical feed screws which are axially movably mounted in the support to move the bearings through distances of up to 800 mm. The pressure transducers can shift the bearings for the uppermost roll through distances of up to 25 mm, and they are movable transversely of the respective feed screws or vice versa to compensate for manufacturing tolerances, wear and/or unequal stresses. The lowermost roll is normally held at a predetermined level by a pair of fluid-operated motors which urge the respective bearings against the undersides of stops provided therefor on the support.
